About Martha
I completed college degrees in Piano Performance (1976) and Music Education from The University of Toledo (1977). I also studied for one semester at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. I've been teaching piano for 40 years.
In addition to her piano studio, I works as an accompanist for singers and instrumentalists, and also plays regularly at churches throughout the Jacksonville and the St Augustine area.
I teach classical music, but allow and encourage my students to branch out into jazz arrangements, Broadway Show classics and new Broadway Shows as music books for them become available. All styles of music are possible to play when you know how to read music.
My focus is first on her students becoming very comfortable with reading music notation. Ear-Training and Theory (structure of the sounds we create) are woven into the lessons, increasing listening and analytical skills.
I love working with both children and adults to bring piano playing alive in aspiring musicians. I love playing piano as much as I enjoy teaching piano!
When I was still in high school, enjoying practicing at my family's home on our grand piano, a neighborhood boy 10-years-old knocked on my door and asked if I could teach him to play piano! The exciting adventure of being a piano teacher began that year for me!

When I first meet my new students I ask some general questions to create an opportunity to glimpse the nature and personality of the individual. I also like to ask what they know about music already. If the student is a transfer student, I like to be able to look at their most recent music books.
All ages.
Play every day! Play piano every day! If something seems extra difficult, I will happily find many ways to help you progress in learning to read music. Once your reading skills are developed, you can play any style of music, including music you are inventing by yourself!
A friend of mine was visiting and "secretly" recorded me playing some Spanish pieces on my piano. My friend reports to me that he is listening to the recording rather regularly!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I approach this from the opposite direction...Always talk to your teacher. I think of myself as warm, friendly, and helpful. If I'm not answering a question in a way you can understand I love finding different ways to help my students gain understaning and experience satisfaction from playing music on a piano!

The tuition for lessons is $110 per month payable at the first lesson of the new month. I expect my students to take 30 minute lessons every week. If there is a scheduling conflict on a certain day, I arrange make-up lessons to ensure continuing progress.
