About Johnny
I have an extensive background of 18+ years in piano/keyboards, drums/percussion, music theory, ear training, improvisation, and music philosophy/therapy. I offer a calm, peaceful, laid-back teaching environment and approach that engages and excites the student on a personal and spiritual level, but more importantly gives them space and room to arrive at accomplishments in their own way and time. I do my best to shape the lesson around the interests, goals, passions, and learning capabilities of each student with the overall outcome focused on empowering them to develop and foster a creatively curious, mindful, and intentional performance/practice. As every mind learns differently, I strive to be as accomodating as possible with all skill levels, ages, and functionalities (i.e. people with autism, ADD/ADHD, trauma, abuse, etc.). At times, this requires me to approach concepts from different viewpoints than I originally might have. It is a challenge that I greet with eagerness as it helps me fine tune my own skill and knowledge.
I enjoy the little moments in lessons where I can geek out with the student about a really musically rich part of a song or an interesting concept I have just learned myself. It brings me fulfillment and pride to see my students' eyes light up and the light bulb click when they finally understand a topic or accomplish learning a difficult piece of music.
I began teaching during the summer after my freshman year of college when a friend from my hometown asked me to teach them piano lessons while I was home on break. From there I then gained a job accompanying a children's summer theatre troupe where I would also teach them the music for the show. I have maintained students on the side as I finished college and am now ready and eager to teach more.
- Bachelor's of Science in General Studies w/ Concentration in Music from Western Michigan University (includes extensive knowledge in music theory, ear training, improvisation, music philosophy, and music history)
- 18 years of piano training (classical, rock, pop, jazz, stride, ragtime, blues, experimental, psychedelia)
- 18 years of drum/percussion training (drum set, traditional solo snare drum, jazz, rock, blues, pop, prog, experimental, psychedelia)
- 5+ years of accompanying on piano/drums--all styles

First and foremost I assess the character of the student. I start conversation to help break the ice and immediately get that student's hands on the instrument. The first 3-4 lessons will begin fairly basic with foundational skills being taught. This allows a time for the student and I to become better acquainted and for me to better understand the intentions, goals, passions, and interests of the student. After this first month I will then start to tailor the lesson to be individualistic and unique to the student's learning habits, interests, and dedication to the lessons.
I have worked with all types of students regardless the age, skill level, or developmental level. My youngest student has been age 5 and my oldest has been age 67. I have a special place in my heart for people with autism as I have many friends and family members with autism. This allows me to have the patience, understanding, and approach it takes to teach people with autism or other developmental differences. The parents of a current student (age 13 w/ autism and ADD) have told me that after the first month of lessons with me they noticed a complete change within their child as he was no longer angry, suicidal, or aggressive and is now conversing and engaging with others around him.
I would show the student, rather than tell, that I am a safe person and that this environment is a safe place and that this is the perfect place to make a mistake because there is no judgement. In fact there are no mistakes, only opportunities to improve. Many times to break the ice I will show them my skill level and what I can do with the instrument, but then mess up purposefully (unknown to them) at the end in order to show that even people with a lot of talent, skill, and knowledge are always learning. In essence, I would tell them that music is a life-long learning practice and that mistakes are a necessary part of this journey.

Johnny’s lessons begin with foundational instruction in playing piano beginning with scales and drills designed to help his students develop technical skills and comfort in playing the piano. Also, Johnny also provides lessons in musical theory so that his students understand not only how to play the piano but how music develops. He’s an awesome teacher and his classes are a blast!
