About Alisia

Hi, hope everyone is doing well during the time of virtual classes. I'm Alisia. May 2020, I graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in Neuroscience and Psychology on a premed track. The highest level of a math class I took in high school is AP Calculus. In College, I took classes including; Calculus I and II, Statistics I and Psychological Statistics. I also understand math from the perspective of the natural sciences on a basic level; i.e. general chemistry, a organic chemistry, and physics. I started tutoring in my junior year of high school. During my first tutoring job, I applied my math knowledge to 7th grade math and finished that tutoring experience in my students 9th grade year (the student became proficient enough to work on his own). Ever since I have tutored students ages from 10- 18 in multiple math course ranging from middle school to the their first year in college.

I enjoy helping students feel capable of completing their studies independently. As school is a prominent factor of a young adults life, the habits students form in school usually roll over into other sectors of their daily life. My favorite part of tutoring is teaching confidence and indepent thinking through the practice of completing assignments.

During my junior year of high school I experienced my first tutoring job. One of my mentor's colleague needed a tutor for her son. I was recommended for that job and tutored him from sixth to ninth grade until he could work independently. Ever since, I have been a tutor for the classmates of my first student, for my family's coworkers, and for my own classmates in college. My most recent tutoring job is also a one on one job.

As of September of last year, I have been working with Ashley Hardware, who is now a freshman at Sacred Heart High School in the Bronx. I have helped Ashley with her transition from middle to high school and with her transition from in class to virtual online sessions. I've worked with a wide range of students. Ranging from students who were not so confident in their studies to students who found having someone to supervise them as they ran through material was helpful.

Typically, I try to get an understanding of the gap between what the student is expected to know and what the student actually knows. After going through and reviewing completed homework assignments and test, I will have a new understanding of the students learning style. Then while making sure the student is grasping the information being taught, I will slowly add in techniques the student can use to strengthen their translation skills (how they learn v how their teacher teaches).

I've worked with a wide range of students. Students who were not so confident in math to students who found having someone supervise them as they ran through material being helpful.

Find someone that you feel comfortable learning from. Having an open space to ask the questions you need to without feeling judged is so important. Think about how you feel when youre in class and reach a learning barrier. What was going through you mind when you initially found yourself disconnected from the material. Asking questions at the first sign of confusion is important and that is hard to do when you are not comfortable with your teacher. :) As a former and future student, I wish all students goodluck on their journey.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Go through the question you have a problem with independently before going through it with a teacher. Figure out exactly what step you start to have questions about the problem or question at. Then form your questions. Think to yourself, what do I need to know to move forward. I encourage all students to be solution focused. Also, the textbook is your best friend!
