About Natalie
I'm an encouraging, reliable, and diligent tutor, passionate about helping students gain confidence and develop their academic goals. I am a college student finishing my degree in biochemistry and writing, looking to pursue a career in teaching & research. I love tutoring because it allows me to create a personalized plan for students' success. Nothing makes me happier than a student genuinely enjoying what they're learning! I have over 2 years' experience with students of all ages. Whether you're the parent of a child who could use extra support, or college student taking summer classes, let's work together on you/your child's success!
The work I do normalizes the fact that many students just need an extra push from an encouraging mentor to succeed. All students have an innate ability to do well academically, good tutors just help bring it out.
In college, my friends and I organized study groups where we would "teach" each other different topics for exams, and I always felt that I enjoyed teaching and taking charge of these review sessions. I immediately began volunteering at an SAT prep program, and then started formally tutoring during the school year. I have loved every teaching hour since then! Nothing makes me happier than knowing students are enjoying what they're learning.

We can start with a free consultation to determine the student's acaemic goals, prior knowledge, and preferred learning style. I ask questions about their school's curriculum and if necessary, compare it to the state standards. Once we begin formal tutoring sessions, we will start by looking at current material and making sure that the student has the right prior knowledge to proceed with this material. During the first few sessions, we usually try out a variety of different learning strategies and then stick with the ones that work best for the rest of the year.
I have worked with students of all ages, from 7 year olds to high schoolers to adults (25+) looking to further their education. I have worked with visual learners, active/physical learners, students who prefer to observe and copy through example and students who like to figure things out on their own.
Find a tutor who models your tutoring plan based on YOUR goals. If you want to gain a deep understanding of the subject and grow to love it, I'm here to help! If you just want to get a good grade, I'm here for that too!
I recently started working with a high school student right before their English Regents. We had one session on how to structure argument essays and write an effective thesis statement. At the end of the session they said, "I've learned more in this session than I have throughout my entire time in high school". I was so happy they found it helpful!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1) Think back to times you did well in school or in a certain subject. What did the teacher do? What did your assignments look like? Why do you think you did well?
2) Could the subject you're seeking help with be important to your future career or life? If you think no, still, consult your tutor about how applicable the information would be for the future.
3) Think about your work attention span. Some students work better with one 3-hour session per week, others work better with three 1-hour sessions per week.

My rate is $20/hr. If families would like a few of their children to all receive tutoring from me, I offer a discount, since many more hours must be put in. I also offer big discounts for group tutoring classes for college students taking the same course. I understand the pandemic has put a financial toll on families so I am always open to negotiation. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me!
