About Alyssa
I encourage students to think of creative ways to solve problems. One way I do this is by coming up with unique ways to visualize the math.
I enjoy helping students and figuring out how students think. I also enjoy getting to work one on one with students because the teaching can be tailored to the individual.
I got started tutoring in high school. A friends younger sister had gotten very behind in school, particularly in math and science, because she had missed a lot of school due to illness. I helped her catch up so she could pass her final. I really enjoyed tutoring so I continued to do so.
I have been a teachers assistant at UVM for the past one and a half years. I have taught recitations, which are large group study sessions, and individually tutored students. I had some training on designing lesson plans and dealing with large groups of students before running my first recitation. I am also a mechanical engineering student, so I have advanced math and science education, and am continuosly required to apply math I learned in middle and high school.

When I work with a new student I first find out the goals for tutoring. This may be set up before the tutoring starts. I find the level the student is at, and get to know them a bit. I also attempt to find learning strategies that work for the student. After the end of the first session I make a study plan for to acheive the students goals.
I have worked primarily with students from middle school, high school, and college.
