About Marina
I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Boston University and work full time as an Actuary. My approach to tutoring students in mathematics is to listen to the student, understand where the difficulties may lie, and work together to go from the theory to problem solving.
I love math. If I don't know what the solution to a problem is, I don't take it as a personal defeat or a sign that anything is wrong with me. Rather I focus on what is being asked, tune out all mental noise, find sources that might help me reason through the problem, and attack it in different ways. I enjoy the process of figuring things out and thinking about them. I like to communicate this to students: that fear or a sense of inadequacy has no reason for being and only harms us and reinforces the vicious circle. The process is worthwhile even if not all problems may be solved. It is hugely satisfactory to see this shift in self-awareness and confidence happening in students and it goes well beyond the material itself.
