About Cheyenne

I am a teacher today because I was once a struggling, frustrated, unique learner, myself.  School was challenging for me, and I found little success in it until I was a junior in high school.  I understand what it is like to feel confused and left out, as if certain lessons, ways of learning, and classes just aren't for you.  My own experiences have led me to find great success in engaging even the most resistant students, as I can empathize with their experinces and/or feelings.

I am a certified middle school math teacher with a Masters in the Art of Teaching. I have over 7 years of experience teaching 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade math, along with Algebra I. I have also worked extensively as a Special Education paraprofessional for several years and have great success working with special populations and students with individualized plans and abilities.

When starting with a new student, I like to spend time getting to know them and who they are as a person.  How do they feel about school?  Themselves?  Life?

I don't believe assessments are necessary to figure out a student's needs.  It is much more comfortable and natural to just begin looking at current work a student may be working on or assigned.  As we talk and work through concepts or assignments together, it becomes clear to me what areas students may need to fill in or get clarity on.

I believe that relationships are the most important thing in learning.  It is usually very difficult to open up to and learn from someone you do not feel safe, connected to, and supported from.  Therefore, I spend a large amount of time working to gain student trust and investing in them as a person initially.

Diversity is what makes the world intersting and progressive.  I love working with incredibly diverse groups of students and therefore enjoy teaching and tutor students from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.

While I have mostly taught students between the ages of 10-17 in an academic setting, I have also worked with young children in a daycare setting for tourtists from all over the world.

I choose to teach in public school settings, but those have ranged from extremely large urban schools to small rural mountain schools.  I attended a private school myself, and have tutored many students that attend private institutions.

The variety of students I work with is very wide, as I've taught several adavanced classes, while also teaching general education classes, support and intervention classes, and working with special populations as an interventionist and paraprofessional.  My travels have led me to teach and tutor in Oregon, Colorado, and Georgia, and I have loved every opportunity to experience new settings and people!

Do your research and look for a tutor to fit your specific needs and personality.  Learning is easiest when we can relate to the person we are learning from and when we feel seen, respected, and understood by them.

I did not always gel with my teachers in middle or high school, as we had different communication styles.  Understanding how to work with people different from yourself is an incredibly important life skill.  However, when you have the option to choose your own instructor or tutor, take it!  Look for someone who you think you will "click with" and look forward to seeing each week.

Ask potential tutors what their own experience was at your age, or as a student.  Finding someone similar to your own experience can sometimes feel reassuring, as it may help them to understand you.

I love getting letters, emails, and texts from past students whom I've worked with updating me on their lives and adventures.  Recently, I heard from one of my students from 2020 who received a scholarship to an elite international boarding school in Switzerland with my support and recommendation.  Her stories are incredible and it warmed my heart to hear how happy and excited she is to be gaining new perspectives from her peers and teachers there.  Seeing students find and follow their passions is incredibly rewarding for me, and I will always do whatever I can to support them in those pursuits.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would suggest reflecting on the following questions and making a few notes.  These notes will help you better understand your own learning styles and needs from a tutor.  Share these things with your tutors so they can best support you!

- Think of teachers or tutors that you have learned best from or liked the most in the past.  What made you connect to those teachers?  What did they do that helped you?

- How do you learn best?  From pictures and visuals?  From listening to a teacher?  From writing down notes yourself?  Do you need to only focus on watching a lesson, or can you watch and take notes at the same time?

- What are your strengths as a student and/or person?  Are you organized?  Do you take good notes?  Do you focus in class?  Are you curious, brave, resilient?  Do you work well with others?  Are you hard-working?

- What are some areas you see yourself needing some help with?  Organization?  Learning how to study?  Taking notes? Completing homework/assignments?  Managing your time?  Learning how to express your ideas or show your work?  Being flexible in your thinking?  Learning to work with others?  Catching up when you fall behind in class?  Speaking up for yourself or talking to teachers?

- Are there specific math areas or skills that you don't understand from the past?  As much as people hate certain math topics like fractions and positive/negative numbers, unfortunately, they aren't going to go away in your future math classes, so it's important to learn them.  (Common examples: fractions, multiplying, division, factoring, positive/negative numbers, percents, word problems.)

- What would be helpful for your teachers and tutor to know about YOU?  Do you need extra time or practice to understand things?  Does speaking up in class, or sharing your thoughts in front of others bother you?  How do you feel about school, math, and yourself right now?  Do you have time to complete homework after school?  What other activities or responsibilities do you have outside of school?  Is language an issue for you in the classroom?  Is there anything preventing you from learning at school?  What are your interests and hobbies?
