About Eva
Physics can be for everyone as long as teachers take the time to figure out how best to commuicate concepts to each specific student. The most fun part of teaching physics is coming up with as many different angles as possible with which to approach an idea!
One of the best things about physics is that it's so much more about how you think than what you know, which allows for actual collaboration between teachers and students. I love when a student starts to gain enough confidence in their own logic to figure out that the problem is posed poorly or to question my explanation of something.
Just from living in the world we're really all recreational physicists, and watching someone realize that the material in physics classes is actually consistent with their intuition about how the world works is always wonderful.
Physics is a super collaborative subject and when schools closed in 2020 I thought how brutal remote physics must have been for students. I posted in my community facebook group that I'd be happy to tutor for free if anyone was struggling and someone reached out.
I have a B.S. in physics from Boston College and am in my second year of an applied pysics PhD program at University of Michigan. While most of my teaching experience comes from seven years of coaching rock climbing, I have spent a little time tutoring high school physics and in college helped pre-med friends study for their physics exams.
Probably most important though is how much time I've spent LEARNING physics. The process is different from most other subjects and that can be really tough for people approaching it for the first time. Six years studying physics has given me the ability to teach others not just the material, but the best ways for them to really learn and understand it and even approach new material on their own. In college, the physics majors used to joke that we spent four years just learning how to learn!

The first step is to talk about what the student is hoping to get out of tutoring. I understand that everyone is coming at the subject from a different place and it's best to be realistic about that; how we approach material will depend on whether the student loves the subject and wants to understand every little detail, just wants to pass a class for a high school credit, or hates the material but needs to know it for an entrance exam, etc.

Details
Pricing depends on the difficulty of the subject matter:
$20/hr for high school physics other than AP
$25/hr for AP and intro level college courses
I doubt anyone will look online for a tutor beyond intro college courses, but if that happens I'm happy to see if we're a good fit and then work out pricing. Not sure if it should cost more becasue the material's harder or less because my understanding might not be as thorough if it's outside my specialty!
