The reason you want to choose this place to get into shape while learning jiu jitsu is because of the instruction. They teach jiu jitsu and wrestling techniques and everyone in jiu jitsu knows that having a solid wrestling base is the preferable base to learn jiu jitsu from. Not to mention the instruction is second to none. One of the instructors is a former Marine, wrestler, and jiu jitsu black belt and the others are known by other jiu jitsu instructors that teach at other schools in the area for being solid instructors, too. They're patient, super understanding, and take time to explain different techniques. I've been attending classes for 6 months now. As a white belt I've been competing lately and even earning medals. But I go to classes cuz they're fun. Be sure to grab a parking permit which they have inside and come to a class. I'm getting so much value for the price. When you come by be sure to say, "Hi." Women's classes are on Friday nights and while I haven't been I hear they're fun, too.
I'm training for the Chicago Open tournament next week and I stopped by Chicago School of Grappling for their Saturday open mat to get in some rolls with new people. There was plenty of (clean) mat space and several different people to roll with. There were different body types, styles, and belt levels which made it nice for competition practice. Everyone was super friendly and more than willing to train in any way - drilling, flow rolling, sparring, positional drilling, etc. There's a changing room, shower, and a fridge full of water available. Parking was a little difficult, but that's because I didn't realize they have parking passes for you there inside. Great place to train - I'll definitely be back.
I spent a month back at home in Chicago for winter break and spent most of that month training with the guys from Chicago School of Grappling. I must say I loved every minute of it. For someone who had a little jujitsu training, every instructor took time explaining everything in detail and pushed the class so every meeting was worthwhile no matter how big or small the class was. The entire aura of the gym and those there training was helpful and uplifting. They even had practice gis for those who didn't have one like myself. In addition, the "Jitfit" class they offer was a great cardio opportunity while still working with jujitsu movements. The guys over this have something really special here and I will make sure every time I'm in Chicago, I will try and stop by.
Great place to learn BJJ. I trained with two Nick coaches and they both good in their own unique way. Very friendly, open and professional. Clean gym and nice positive atmosphere. Usually, the gym is never crowded and trainers have enough time to correct you when you doing something wrong. I would definitely suggest that place if you want to improve your physical shape and thinking in critical situations.
If you're looking to start a great journey with great instructors I cannot recommend this school enough! Started my Jiu Jitsu journey with Instructor Nick Cimm and since then, have had so much fun coming here. John Le and Nick Mitria have also been fantastic. The school offers classes in Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Jit Fit( A Jiu Jitsu based exercise class).
Great place to learn with quality instruction. Will be coming here for hopefully, a very long time. Come in and try a class, you won't regret it!In the beginning of August i was trying to look for a MMA Gym in Chicago to learn how to do BJJ ( Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). While looking around, one particular place caught my eye and made me feel like this was the place to be. Got off of the Racine Blue line and walked about two-three blocks towards the UIC Pavilion. My first class was JitFit ; a combination of Jiu Jitsu drills with basic conditioning exercises in the mix. It literally made me sweat my butt off. Afterwards John ( Owner and Trainer) persuaded me to do BJJ afterwards. I was pretty hesitant since i felt like i lost all my stamina but something inside told me to KEEP GOING. After that class, I gained a good sense of confidence and eventually I started to go almost everyday. They start you off with a seven day trial to check out their other classes with other skilled trainers. Beside BJJ they have Kickboxing, Boxing, Wrestling , Women's and kids grappling 101 and they do a free mat session on the weekends. The vibe is very family-like and everyone is there to help you succeed. The motto of the gym is keep trying and fail to learn. Such a perfect motto for place that motivates you to be your better self!
Looking for an experienced but welcoming BJJ gym? Seeking an effective high intensity workout? Convenient location in Chicago? The Chicago School of Grappling is a yes for all three.
Having been a wrestler and jiujitsu practitioner for a number of years, I was very interested in the CSOG. I attended one of the JitFit sessions which is comprised of a circuit of high-intensity, jiujitsu-based exercises. The JitFit sessions are non-contact and fitness oriented, I feel they are well suited to beginners to advanced people trying to get fit, as well as men and women. I believe they have a kids session too. I enjoyed my session, having mainly been lifting the past few years, and the HIIT type session was helpful in addressing my cardio and goal of leaning up, while practicing fundamental jiujitsu maneuvers.
The instructors are very experienced here, Nick and John (black and purple belts respectively), and can teach the spectrum of jiujitsu - from fitness enthusiast to advanced competitor. I highly recommend checking out the CSOG! I'm looking forward to my next session. This is definitely an amazing Brazilian jiu-jitsu School, I take my Daughters to the kids classes, and they love it. Not only is the instruction very clear for them, but they definitely have a feeling of family that the school provides for them. They also have a children's boxing class they go to Saturday morning, that they enjoy as well. It's definitely helped my girls build confidence.
Chicago School of Grappling is a place that is welcoming, hospitable, knowledgeable, and effective for getting intense workouts in. When they say they are no non-sense, they mean it. They are upfront about pricing and their schedule, which is a rarity in many mma gyms/schools. Offering technique in muy thai, Brazilian jui jitsu, and boxing, as well as Jit Fit classes ( jui jitsu based conditioning training ), there is something here for everyone. There are no payment schemes here, they just want you to improve. I only went here for about a month, however, I will definitely be coming back when my schedule allows! Awesome place!
My Roomate trains there every week. He loves grappling there.
The instructors are great! The owner John is helpful, intelligent, and knows what he is doing!
I was looking for a gym to focus primarily in Jiu Jitsu since I was doing MMA for about half a year, this was my first choice and I love it (Joined Jan 2018). I signed up alone and was nervous, most gyms do not have a lot of females train but they made me feel comfortable and I go at my own pace. Any questions I have, have been answered in detail and I can tell everyone is very knowledgeable. I am looking forward to grow within Chicago School of Grappling. Side note they have Womens only Friday classes. Helps a lot!
Chicago School of Grappling is a great gym with kind welcoming people and is well worth a chance for anyone curious about martial arts.
Just two weeks in, I feel like I already improving in Jiu Jitsu and my ability to fight. Learning martial arts can be intimidating at first, but the welcoming spirits of the teachers and students make all the difference.
Also, as a woman I haven't felt in slightest bit uncomfortable, the attitude is truly about making sure people are kind and respectful to each other. Zero tolerance for anything else.
I would recommend this gym to anyone, no matter the skill level. And the first week of all of their classes are free! There is no reason not to see it for yourself.Nick is an excellent coach who knows the ins and outs of jiujitsu, wrestling and how to combine them effectively. He also has a great approach to competition which he is eager to share with students!
I've been involved in the Sport of MMA/Grappling/BJJ for 20 years and I believe Nick Cimm is an excellent instructor! Anyone that is in the area should definitely check this school out, you won't be disappointed!
Tons of respectful students and teachers! I was visiting from Detroit and they brought me in like I was family. They have friendly people, and tight jiujitsu. Thanks guys!
Nick is a phenomenal instructor, and the students are warm and inviting. With Nick's deep knowledge of jiu-jitsu and patience as an instructor, you are in good hands.
Came in not knowing what to expect. I did the JitFit and the BJJ w Gi class; best experience I've had with a martial arts class. I will definitely invest my time and my money with this school. Thanks!!
Had a wonderful time training here while I was in town. The technique had a lot of useful details I had never seen before. Everyone was super nice and made me feel immediately welcome. The rolls were intense but always friendly. I will definitely stop in again next time I'm in town and would recommend it to anyone who loves a casual training environment.
Great place with an ego free environment.
