About Bob

I have always taken pride in my mentoring and tutoring abilities.

My key focus is visual examples and simple solutions.

Whether it was my boys with science and software homework, or fellow developers at work needing code reviews and/or guidance regarding fundementals of software programming concepts, it has been a part of my Life since the early the late 1990s'.

Although I'm a leader in industry, I ensure I speak to all levels of understanding, with hopes that I can teach others to enjoy and understand the field that has been so good to me over the years.

I love science and engineering.

I also love teaching others about what I love, and helping them grow in my field.

I was a teaching assistant in Graduate School, but have always mentored in different aspects of both Life Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Instrumentation, Pharmaceutical Process flow, Pharmaceutical Compliance, etc..) and Computer Sciences (Microsoft Full-Stack developer -> Database, Web Design, Windows Desktop Applications, Web API, Web Services, some Mobile, Microsoft Office Applications) as well as newer cloud-based technologies (Azure) along with miscellaneous concepts: Azure Dev Ops, GIT, TFS, ETL Processing, NoSQL with Cosmos and MongoDB.

I have an MS in Software Engineering from Penn State University, and countless hours of training in Microsoft Stack of development for software;  I've worked in every area of building applications, from working with Microsoft Office Products (all of them) to developing [and mentoring a team to develop] enterprise applications for use on the World Wide Web.

I also worked at a Teaching Assistant in graduate school, have two teenage sons who I mentor on a regular basis, and a team of younger developers whom I mentor on a regular basis..

We can do Zoom, Skype, Microsoft Teams, or phone (Whatever the student would prefer).  We can exchange conversations over email as well, although that makes things a bit more difficult.

My process is to give visual drawings of things when applicable, to start high level and give real-world and meaningful examples to clients, to assist them and understanding not just what they need to, but why, and how it fits into the larger scale of what they're trying to do.

References are always something I try to provide as well, and so I'll try to provide them with solid websites that can also give examples of what we're learning (maybe even go over some).

In the past I've worked with camp students (very young)

Teenagers (Educational purposes)

Work Professionals (Scientists et.al. in Life Science Industry)

Work Professionals (Software Developers in Tech Industry)

Make sure you ask all the questions you need answered...don't be afraid to ask WHY.

Any mentor or teacher should be able to answer in a way that satisfies you, or else they haven't done their job.

Definitely ask yourself what you want to accomplish with a given mentor/tutor, and ensure you meet that goal before stepping away from talking with them.  They should provide you with all you need to understand.

I am a team lead for a group of 8 developers in the Tech Industry, where I review their code, assist with their understanding of current and new programming concepts.

A younger developer, just out of school, requested I review his work with him.  While the code had flaws, I made sure to highlight the solid areas where he was on the right track.

We worked on several key areas where the code could be improved, I gave him suggestions to going off to improve those areas, with references to examples:

(concealed information)

with next day schedule to do paired programming to guide him on testing and understanding what we did and why.

We also built a flow diagram showing him how it fit into what he was working on, and why we did it.  The HOW and WHY has already helped him to understand what to do next and why...the end result has been his ability to build and scale the page with little help from me.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would have to say "see above".

Everyone learns differently, so make sure you know yourself a little first.

Make certain you relay what you'd like to understand from your tutor;  but be realistic in your goals, and make them shorter term goals.
