About Judie

My service is on a personal level with the student. I am genuinely interested in each one and what is going on outside of the lesson. I am able to work with them at THEIR pace, at THEIR level--not tied to a fixed curriculum as in a regular school setting. The student drives how quickly we proceed. It is important that the student not only be able to execute the assignment, but also to understand the how and why of the assignment. There is an old saying (paraphrasing): I can make you dinner for today, or I can show you how to make dinner so you can eat in the future.

I have been a Yamaha Conert Artist since 2004. In 2008, I and Expressions and Reflections were named Entrepreneur of the Year by the New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners—Women’s Business Center (NJAWBO). In 2013 - 2017, I was named a finalist as one of New Jersey’s Leading Women Entrepreneurs and Business Owners. I am also a consultant for the Women's Center for Entrepreneurship Corporation.

I enjoy music! I enjoy bringing smiles to the faces of my students when they realize what they can do. It is gratifying to watch the students take what they have learned and apply to something else they are doing. Music teaches lessons that work across a broad spectrum, not just the lesson itself.

I started with music by learning the piano very early, in first grade.  I continued my studies for many years.

In 7th grade, I was already playing for high school performances, teaching students in the neighborhood, and serving as community theater Music Director.  I also directed the guitar choir in church, which lead to a lifetime of being a church musician---something I still do to this day.  During high school, I served as Accompanist and Assistant Vocal Director for the school musicals and other productions.  Needless to say, music opened MANY doors for me.

I have been teaching for over 50 years.  My educational background includes study in music theory, application, performance and directing from Moraine Valley College in Illinois and six years of study at the Bortolli Conservatory of Music in Chicago, Illinois.

The first thing I like to do with a new student is get to know them--what are their interests, what are they studying in school/what is their profession, what music do they like, do they see themselves doing anything special with their music, etc.

I then explain what my program is.  I want them to understand why I am teaching in a certain way and how it will benefit them.

I always ask, multiple times, if there are any questions.  There is no such thing as a bad of dumb question!

I have worked with students as young as 4 years of age through students as "young" as 90 years of age.  The younger the student, the more parental involvement there needs to be.

I have also worked with students who have had autism and cerebral palsy.  I developed an aid for the cerebral palsy student that allowed her to play the piano with both hands.  What a precious look on her face the first time she tried it!  I also developed an adaptation for the music deck that hooked onto her grand piano without causing any damage to the piano itself.  This brought the music closer to her and made it easier for her to read.

On occasion, teaching of other instruments is requested, such as beginning violin, drum, flute, etc.

My innovative approach to developing students' performance technique includes offering Student and Community Ensemble Band class, which groups musicians with varied instrumental abilities.  The members work together to produce a repertoire of musical selections.  The ensemble class also enables students to arrange selections, which is a skill that is a complement to routine music instruction.  The Ensemble performs at local organizations, such as retirement communities and assisted living residences as a community service, as well as other public venues.

If I were student looking to hire a teacher, I would look for the following:

--Does the teacher have the skills necessary to teach me?

--Do I have a rapport and understanding with the teacher?

--How much experience does the teacher have?

--Do I understand the policies of the studio?

We celebrated the Tenth Anniversary of the founding of the Student and Community Ensemble Band.  Their presentation featured a medley of all the songs they presented at concerts over the past ten years.  This presentation was completely arranged by the group.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students need to understand that music, no matter what instrument you choose to learn, is another language.  It requires COMMITMENT, PRACTICE and PATIENCE.  Learning an instrument is not going to happen overnight; it takes a LONG time to become proficient.  Students must be able to commit a significant amount of time each week to practicing what is presented at the lesson. Most of all, the student should ENJOY what they are learning.  Nobody needs another thing to do that is drudgery.
