About Jennifer
I believe every flute student has the ability to succeed with hard work, a love for music, and dedicated guidance. Whether striving for acceptance into an honor band, preparing for a big audition, or simply wishing to get back into the flute, I welcome and encourage students of all types to my private studio. I want flutists to reach their individual goals and become their own personal teachers. Students should leave each week feeling empowered and in charge of their own learning.
Because every student learns differently, lessons are a time for exploration, discovery, and improvement. I encourage students to tap into their creative potential by exploring different tonal colors and phrasing possibilities. In order to achieve this, I play with and for students during lessons when needed. Students then have an aural model they can imitate and interact with, which encourages better musicality, intonation, and ensemble. By listening, practicing, listening, analyzing, and listening yet again, students become equipped with the strategies for musical success.
As a classically trained musician, I focus on a traditional, yet engaging, method of teaching. I concentrate on fundamentals—tone production, breathing, scales, and technique—with all of my students in order to lay a solid foundation for solo and ensemble repertoire. Students will work on scales, finger exercises, etudes, and solo pieces on a weekly basis. Repertoire selections will be challenging and realistic in order to effectively motivate and engage students. Every student is expected to practice daily, and I tailor specific practice requirements to each player according to age, ability, and goals.
Technology in the studio is becoming more important all the time. Embracing this is just one way to enhance the private studio experience. Whether it’s finding a metronome app, uploading lesson assignments to a Google Doc, compiling theory assignments on a lesson flash drive, or watching YouTube recordings of famous artists, technology of all types can be incorporated into a music setting. I believe when students record themselves and evaluate their own progress, they engage with their learning in a more meaningful way.
I also discuss strategies with my students regarding physical and mental health as part of playing the flute. Stretching and taking breaks are important parts of practice and performance. Additionally, performing in front of people can be quite daunting for some; performance psychology and mental coping strategies are essential for a performing artist and are just as important as learning daily finger exercises. Having mock performances in lessons, playing for friends and family, and creating constructive mental dialogue while performing are all strategies I employ while teaching.
I maintain an open line of active communication with both students and parents. In order to do this, I employ email to send out frequent reminders and updates on student progress, allowing both students and parents to stay positively involved.
I started teaching in high school, giving lessons to middle school students in my school district. I then continued giving summer lessons on my breaks during college, and during grad school I maintained a private studio while completing my degree. After moving for my current symphony job, I have started my studio over again and am building it back up in a new city.
I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Flute Performance and have taught flute lessons for 11 years now.

My first lesson with a new student is all about getting to know personality, work ethic, playing goals, playing level, and determining if we could work well together. I usually have a new student play a couple scales, a solo they've prepared or something from a band method book, a favorite exercise, or whatever they feel most comfortable playing. If a student is picking up a flute for the first time, I start from the very beginning with terminology, tone production basics, breathing, use of core muscles, etc.
I have worked with students of all ages and levels. I have taught beginners from age 8 and also teach adults in their 60s. Most of my students are school age, ranging from elementary through high school.
Think about your goals as a music student. Who do you think can help you achieve them? Find a teacher with whom you can communicate and really develop a healthy working relationship.
One of my students auditioned for youth orchestra in the spring and did not make it. She was so passionate about trying again that she practiced hard the entire summer, really taking to heart all the things we worked on in lessons. By the time fall audition rolled around, she had become much more confident, had transformed her sound into a tone that was big and healthy, and could play her excerpts with great time, pitch, and musicality. She was accepted into the top youth symphony.

Details
I use a tuition system. Students can pay for an entire semester at a discounted rate, pay monthly (due the first of each month), or pay per lesson at a slightly higher rate. The rates are determined by lesson length. Monthly rates for 60 minute lessons are $160 per month or $45 per lesson; 45 minute lessons are $120 per month or $33.75 per lesson; 30 minute lessons are $80 per month or $22.50 per lesson.
