About JESSICA

Hi my name is Jessica Johnson. I am currently a PhD student at UCLA and my focus is on Special Education and children with autism spectrum disorder. I love working with children and I have worked with general education children as well as special education. I have a passion for writing and I have also worked at Adventures in Writing camp for 2 years! Don't hesitate to reach out so that we can schedule something. I am flexible on the weekends and during the week I can come as long as it's not during my class schedule.

I got started teaching during my undergraduate degree at Cal Poly SLO. I really fell in love with working with students and realized it was something that made me happy and that I was passionate about.

I have worked in Adventures in Writing camp for 2 years as an instructor. I also have worked as a substitute teacher for both special educaiton and general education. I have my bachelors degree from California Polytechnic State University, my masters degree and teaching credential from San Jose State University and I am currently earning my PhD from UCLA. I also have worked in ABA therapy for about 2 years.

About the lesson

I think it's important to know where the student stands. What are their strengths and areas for improvement. Then go from there and see what style of learning works for them. Are they a visual learner? If so, then more diagrams and pictures would be better to help them. Also giving lots of examples so that they know what is expected of them.

I have worked with children on varying areas of the ASD spectrum. I have worked many children in special education. I have worked with general education students as well. My primary area I work with is children in elementary school.

I had worked as an ABA therapist and had a mother reach out to me and tell me a small story about an improvement her daughter had made. She said I really made a difference for her daughter and it's something that brought tears to my eyes and also a memory I will never forget.
