About Rob
In my tutoring I lead with compassion and patience. I understand that writing and reading and analysis can be daunting, but in my years of experience I've discovered tips and strategies for making these tasks less difficult. I teach writing formulas and provide templates that make these tasks more interesting, and, in fact, even fun. Once students pick up these formulas and strategies they will be able to use them in all of their reading, writing, and analysis assignments-- not just in English classes, but also in any class that requires these skills (essay writing, in-class essay exams, written responses, etc.). I have been a professor of English and Creative Writing since 2020.
A large part of my teaching and tutoring is based on student self-assessment. This means I help the student to assess, understand, and utilize both their strengths and the areas in which they need to improve in order to become a more confident and skilled writer and critical thinker.
What I most enjoy is seeing students succeed, and this doesn't always mean A+ work, though of course that is nice, too. However, for me, success is growth no matter how small. I means having more confidence in your writing. It means being less anxious about the work so that with each assignment your skill level grows and you begin to look at the work as not just 'work' but a fun and exciting challenge.

I have been teaching for twenty years (though I look young!). I have a B.A. in English from Arizona State University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University.
I began as a tutor in english as an undergraduate at Arizona State University. My duties included tutoring in essay writing, grammar, sentence structure, organization, brainstorming ideas, and much more.
My first years of teaching experience were in after school programs in the inner city New York, during my graduate studies in English at Columbia University. In these programs I tutored in english and I worked with students on college application essay. The students I worked with on their applications went on to attend such schools as UC Berkeley, Columbia University, UCLA, UCSD, Boston University, and many more.
In graduate school at Columbia University in New York City. I taught undergraduate english to students who were in their first and second semester of college.
Since 2013 I have been a full-time tenured professor of English at Skyline College in San Bruno, California. Skyline College ranks among California's best community colleges, as well as inspires a global and diverse community of learners to achieve intellectual, cultural, social, economic and personal fulfillment.

With a new student I begin by getting to know them, their interests, hobbies, and what it is they like to do OUTSIDE the classroom in order to get a sense of who they are. I like to be able to bring in activites and exercises that they can relate to. For example, if I know that a student is a fan of baseball, I bring in readings or activities that utilize baseball trivia or facts. If they are interested in science, but we're working on an English essay, I will present activities that are related to science in order to teach the skills that will be needed for the English essay.
I also make it a priority to LISTEN to student concerns, fears, doubts, and what they may be anxious about when it comes to writing, reading, and critical thinking. It's helpful for me to know what these concerns or doubts or insecurities are so that I can begin to build their confidence in these areas through encouragement, support, and clear, helpful feedback.
I have worked with students of all ages, races, and abilities. As previously stated, I work at Skyline College, a school known for it's diverse campus community.
I have worked with students as young as eight years-old up to 80 years old. From high school students trying to pass their English class or write their college application personal essay/statement to adult return students who have not been in a classroom in many years.
The opportunity to work with students of diverse backgrounds, abilities, ages, races, etc., is the reason I became a teacher in the first place.
Look for an instructor who is passionate about teaching-- and tutoring IS teaching.
Each student that I tutor is treated with respect and compassion. My tutoring sessions are Class Sessions, where you will receive the same attention, strategies, techniques, tips, and keys to success that you would receive if you were in one of my 'face-to-face' classes.
Plus, they're fun. Fun is important.
Recently, due to Covid-19 all of my face-to-face classes were immediately transitioned into online classes. My students graciously and enthusiastically faced and mastered this challenge, because I made it a priority to stay connected to the students, even if we couldn't meet face to face, through Zoom sessions, emails, one-on-one online tutorials. Though I was worried that I might lose some students or that their understanding and attention would suffer, I was able to make the class sessions fun, lively, and interactive, and ended with one of my most successful semesters as far as pass rates.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what it is you would like to accomplish with your teacher and let the teacher know this. If you don't know yet, that's ok too. A good teacher will help guide you towards these goals.
Ask yourself (and of course ask the teacher), what kinds of learning have I been successful with in my school life so far? Am I a visual learner (learning through images and through reading) or an auditory learner (learning through hearing and listening). What types of learning (or techniques used by your teacher) was difficult or too challenging for you? It's ok to let your teacher know these things so we can adjust our teaching for your learning style.
