About Sarah

With my educational background in Psychology, I cater to each of my student's individual needs. It is critically important students are not unfairly characterized, and I have the evidence-based knowledge and experience to adapt to meet your needs to make your learning experience fun, entertaining and a memory you'll have later of having your confidence built up, just as it should be.

I also have the belief that students are entitled to know why the subject matter is important and/or relevant, and I greatly enjoy explaining the why of things. Perhaps because in my formative years I was told, "you'll never carry a calculator in your pocket every day" as I type on an iPhone, with a calculator, which I carry in my pocket, every day.

Writing, critical thinking, teaching myself and contionuously challenging myself to be better, to learn more, to be a more effective tutor, and my ability to break down advanced concepts into small, one step at a time achievable challenges are some of my biggest strengths.

I like to share a step-by-step method for studying, which allows you to more easily retain more information, be far less likely to forget it, and more easily be able to recall and confidentally explain a concept.

This method of studying was passed down to me from my favorite professor, who has a doctoral degree in neuroscience. It is also useful for adults of all ages, in every part of life which involes tasks which feel impossible and overwhelming.

I have been mentoring and tutoring students from the age of 17 until today, at 31. I have taught kindergarten students how to read, and I have published a research thesis as an undergraduate (only a handful of undergrads in the nation have the opportunity and ability to do so.)

I'm well-versed in every style of writing, and was consistently (despite feeling shocked by the positive feedback each time) told how imoressed my professors comments were about my writing level. "PhD level writing skill" and "most scientifically brilliant research thesis I've ever read from an undergrad" are two I can remember.

I believe in meeting you wherever you are, treating you as my intellectual equal at a bare minimum, but my overarching philosophy is encouragement, empowerment, celebration of any achievement equally no matter how big or small. Believing in yourself and having the confidence you are capable of achieving anything is crucially important, and I am going to drill that into your head,

For students with dyslexia, ADHD, or other circumstances which prevent students from demonstrating their inherently natural gifts by the way our educational system is set up, I work to learn in my off-time what YOU need to be more successful in an environment which unfairly mistypes the way you think and the way your brain works. It is important you know that there is nothing wrong with you. Because, there really is nothing wrong with you. You are gifted, and I work to bring those gifts within you out by adapting and adjusting to the learning style best suited to you. This also helps to build your confidence in yourself, which is especially imporant in children, and even still in high school students.

Remember, I work for YOU.

I enjoy sharing what I have learned through hard and painful lessons to hopefully prevent younger generations from enduring such difficult hardships. I enjoy sharing the specific methods and resources I used while earning my degree and allowed me to be inducted into so many different honor societies, i.e. "work smart, not hard" except I break down my method for learning step by step. I can explain the easiet and most efficient ways to study which will hlp your brain retain the information more fully and more quickly.

I began as a freshman in high school, initially teaching basketball over summer camps. I was often approachex by the parents of my campers for paid private lessons, and I was always happy to help. I work best one-on-one. I myself have severe ADHD, but helping others is one of the few remedies that relieves me of those symptoms. I enjoy learning about everyone, especially those different than me, and I have always been talked to as if I'm a source of comfort, encouragement, and rapid improvement, although I do not see myself that way and am always looking for ways to be better and improve.

By my senior year, I was spending half the day at the elementary school teaching children how to read.

I have always been "that girl to hey there answers from," because I genuinely enjoy learning and passing along that knowledge.

Graduated in the top 5% of the nation.

Earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology which prepared me to be a creative problem solver, think critically, consciously be aware of my own bias in order to promptly dismiss it.

I have two minors: criminology and applied statistics.

My internationally-recognized contemporary art is my primary business, but it is not what I love. I love learning, and passing on that knowledge to others, and especially concentrating on the methods I used to earn so many honors, awards and credentials. If I can do it, anyone can!

It was not an easy road for me. My dad and my youngest brother died when I was 17, 2 weeks before I graduated high school. Despite being offered a full-ride to the No. 11 nationally ranked women's basketball team, I had already had three bilateral leg surgeries, and when the coaches I signed for resigned two weeks before school started, and my surviving parent nor anyone else in my circle or family and friends ever came to a single game, I didn't have the strength to carry one, and had to give up my scholarship.

Basketball was the center of my relationship with my father, and I was the most gifted athletically and the closest to him, despite being his only daughter. His death obliterated me, and my surviving parent quickly moved on, making me feel as if I had lost both parents, my baby brother, and basketball, the only thing I had ever loved or dedicated myself to, which I had done my entire life up to that point. My fathers death especially, completely obliterated me. I had a father, but I was fatherless. I was alone, and I went down a dark and difficult path, which has made me into an especially compassionate and empathetic person. My sole purpose as a tutor is helping every student feel they are important and worthy of love, and my natural teaching ability is secondary to student success to reinforce their worth.

I still hold several records at my alma mater (3 pointers, etc.) and am a natural teacher, because I learned from my father, who was also a natural teacher. The best gift he gave me was teaching me HOW to think, not WHAT to think. And although he is no longer living, he still holds records for most points in a game at his alma mater (51 points!)

If you do not have a great experience with me, I would encourage you to seek out other tutors until you find one you like.

My father died when I was 17, and despite being his only daughter with 3 brothers, I am the most like him personality wise. We enjoyed many things together. About a week before he died suddenly and unexpectedly in front of me at only 47 years old, we saw a red-tailed hawk dive and make a kill, and were so excited by it, despite usually having a calm, dead-panned, quiet demeanor.

Last week, I saw another hawk dive and make a kill in the very same spot, almost 14 years later. I couldn't help but grin ear to ear.

Remember, I've done volunteer work most of my life, and although I'm 31, I have been your age too. I have endless patience and compassion to give if other factors are interfering with your school work, and I can absolutely help you with anything going on in your life. Baseline pricing is $37/hour. Factors that may influence my rate is how far you're traveling to me (discounts will be given for significant distance), your age, your willingness and attitude, and the subject matter.

I do have many other responsibilities and will refuse service if a pattern of no effort is made, because then I would be taking money without providing high-quality service, and I am personally not willing to do that because it feels wrong to me.
