About Coby
- I enjoy the puzzle of determining what it is about a topic that a student is struggling to understand, as well as trying to plan in advance to organize information for better understanding.
- I am a firm believer in the relationship between our ability to learn and our emotional wellbeing. Curiosity, invention, and learning happen best when we feel confident and supported. It's not enough just to push.
- I have been a Bilingual Special Education classroom Teacher for High Schoolers and Middle Schoolers for five years.
- I am certified as a Generalist, meaning that I bring Special Education know-how to Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Math.
- Most of my experience has been in teaching 9th Grade Global History and 11th Grade Language Arts.
- In case what you are looking for is assistance with school-provided lessons, I am familiar with aligning my practice to standards provided by school administration, as well as modifying material through scaffolding and differentiation, to make learning more accessible to students.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy, which I chose to pursue because of my passion for articulating information well, and for understanding what others are communicating to me.
I have a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certificate, with Young Learners and Business English supplements. This gives me a solid foundation in explaining the tricky aspects of English, whether for instructing new arrivals to the US, or for untangling some of the knottier problems for fellow native speakers.
I am at Level 25 (out of 25) in Spanish on Duolingo. I intend to get as far in a few other languages as well. My love of language extends beyond English, and my journey with Spanish has clarified many aspects of my own language for me.
I have done a lot of different work, but the experience I've had that is most directly relevant to tutorship is my time as a camp counselor. I have not yet encountered a job that I've enjoyed quite so much, which is part of why I'm pursuing tutuoring at the moment, and why I'm intending to obtain certification as a teacher in the NYC public school system and my Master's in Education through the Teaching Fellows program. I want to put my energy towards education because there isn't a more worthwhile service than providing access to information.

My best resource for deciding where to begin is whatever you can tell me. I want to know what sort of learner you are, so that I can find or create the resources that will be most easily digestible for you. I want to know where it is that you find yourself struggling, and what else you would like to improve upon. I want to hear what you want to learn. This gives me a good way to index what I observe as we begin to tackle information together, and to combine what you notice about yourself with what I notice about you, into the best possible process for you. Which information we tackle is entirely up to you.
Though I am new to tutoring, I have had lifelong experience in explaining the English language to my best friend, who knew only a handful of words when I met him, and is now in an MFA Creative Writing Program in the New School in NYC. I've edited hundreds of pages of his writing, and he has not only published, but three of his stories have been short-listed or nominated for literary prizes.
When I was a day-camp counselor, I was working with between fifteen and thirty children, ages eight to twelve. While we were singing songs, playing games, making crafts, swimming, and hiking, we were learning about communication, logic, cooperation, fitness, safety, skills, nature, and following directions.
