About Maddy
I believe my job as a teacher is to collaborate with a student to overcome a challenge. Do you want to write a term paper? Great! Do you want to learn how to use a semi-colon? Let's do it! I'm on your side.
I graduated with honors from New York University in 2022, and I am a current graduate student in their Educational Theatre program. I have been teaching and tutoring since 2012, and I have worked with students age 6-17 in a variety of subjects and modalities.
My philosophy is to meet each student wherever they are and tailor lessons to their individual needs. Through years of teaching, seeing students reach an "a-ha moment" has been the most rewarding part of the process and I strive to foster these supportive, encouraging environments.
With every lesson, I aim to meet students where they are. By tailoring lessons to fit their backgrounds, interests, and needs, together we create an environment that emphasizes progress over perfection. Every student brings something new to the table and I strive to use their individual strengths to build new skills in a way that is engaging, challenging, and supportive.
I started teaching music lessons (guitar, piano, music theory) and have since branched out into other subjects (English, SAT prep, playwriting, theatre) over the years. Long story short, I have had great teachers over the course of my life, and I know what a difference it can make.
I graduated with honors from New York University's undergraduate program, and I am currently completing my Masters in Educational Theatre there as well. Long story short, I have written my fair share of academic papers!
I have been teaching and tutoring Music and English (specializations in music theory, composition, and playwriting) since 2012, and I have worked with students ages 6-17 with a variety of learning abilities.

Whenever I start working with a new student, I use the first lesson to determine how they work, learn about methods that have or have not worked for them in the past, and together, we determine short-term and a long-term goals for their learning.
I typically let the student walk me through their thought processes and explain for themselves what they find difficult, easy, engaging, horribly borring etc. and then I tailor my teaching approach to this information.
I have worked with students ages 6-17, all with a variety of interests, passions, learning abilities, and backgrounds. I have taught both in-person, online, one-on-one, and in group settings.
I would let them know that your teacher is there to teach you in a way that works for your brain. Any good teacher should be able to explain a subject in 100 different ways in order to find the one that makes sense to you. If you're ready and willing to put the work in, you and your teacher can tackle even the most awful, horrible, boring assignments. That's what we do best!
The students in my playwriting class just received their hard-copy scripts of the play they have been writing collaboraitvely. One student said to me, "Hey, these are our ideas printed right into the script! It's cool to read my own words in here". It was great to see them put so much work into a project and then finally see it exist in the world.
