When working with a new student, I first meet with the tutoree in a casual setting, if applicable, to understand what their (or their families) goals are for tutoring.
Then, we would move onto an observation- for an older student that may mean responding to a writing or reading sample, for a younger student that might look like how they interact with the print in their environment.
The information gathered will allow for a curriculum to be built around a student's strengths and needs.

Kathleen made me feel more confident in English class. I had always hated English classes because it is not my native language. I liked working with Kathleen because she made writing essays about boring books fun. She taught me how to write poetry as a way to practice English and now I write it for fun. She is a great teacher, but she also really cares about me beyond my grades.
