About Eric

Writing is my hobby. Working with graduate students, undergraduate students, business writers, and technical writers has taught me that writing is relevant in every field. I want to extend my years of professional experience within writing to those who need extra help. I will make sure that your quality of writing will improve when working with me.

I worked with students one on one at the University Writing Center. This job gave me a feeling of satisfaction that no other job has given me. It challenged me to work with students of all English writing backgrounds.

Worked at a University Writing Center for a year and a half. I also worked for a real estate software in technical writing.

All languages in which the lesson is available :

English

1) I ask the student what his/her background with writing is like.

2) I will have the student talk to me about his/her project, writing assignments and where they struggle in writing.

3) I direct the student and engage them about their topic. I generally begin a Socratic seminar with them to see if they know much about their topic, whether it be on an engineering project or creative writing.

4) While we begin talking about their topic, I teach them how to formulate their ideas into the beginning of a writing process. I show them how to organize their ideas into an outline.

5) Once the outline is formed, I tell them that all they have to do is write. They now have a general idea on what their paper looks like.

6) I ask questions and test their knowledge on writing styles; APA, MLA, etc.If they do not know, I refer them to websites, articles, books that cover these writing styles.

7) I ask the student if they are ready to begin writing their paper and if there are any additional questions before we meet for the second time.

8) When the student comes back with written content, we begin to see where some ideas work, where they need to improve, and what other ideas might be prevalent to the paper.

I have worked with students as young as 13, to graduate students finishing their PhD program. I coordinate with writing professors as well.

Writing is essential to almost every field of work. It is a field that most students do not focus on because it appears commonly used everyday, especially through social media platforms. However, there are many forms of writing. A good tutor will know multiple writing forms and what context to use them in.

I worked with an international student from Saudi Arabia at South Dakota State Universities Writing Center. He was great at communicating verbally, but his writing skills in English were very poor. He admitted that he only took basic English courses in high school but he did not challenge himself to learn English. He struggled with writing basic English grammar. I took this opportunity as his tutor to challenge him.

He had an essay for his English 101 course and there were two weeks left until the final due date. Within those two weeks, I challenged him to come in every other day and write his ideas out without thinking about grammar. We would talk about his topic as if it were a regular conversation while he took notes. I then showed him how to map his notes into an outline. From then on, he wrote his paper. It was full of grammar mistakes still, so I would run through the grammar mistakes and ask him about the basics of what he thinks is the subject, verb, noun. I taught him English sentence structure.

Within those two weeks, he learned more about writing English more than he ever did in his entire high school career. He received a solid B. It was not an A, but for a student with minimal experience writing in English, it was a big accomplishment. He would come in every week and sign up to meet with me so that we could work on his papers.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Some good questions to ask are:

1) How do I begin to write about this?

2) What does my professor/boss want me to write?

3) What format should I use?

4) How do I organize my paper?

5) How do I write an outline?

6) What are some good writing style examples?

7) Where do I find myself struggling with writing this paper? This is common with all writers. It is called writers block.
