About Kathleen

I graduated with straight As from Northwestern University with a bachelor's degree in English, and then graduated with straight As from DePaul University with a masters degree in education. I have been tutoring for eight years, and also work as a developmental therapist.

Tutoring is a joy for me. I form a relationship with the student and bring fun into the learning whenever I can. I believe that kids have to feel that you are invested in them and know them in order to really want to learn from you - and I hope I do that with all of my students.

I have recently tutored a student who attended a non-traditional school through grade five, and was many levels behind in his math education. Working together, he is now up to grade level and getting an A in his math class.

Every student is different, and I work to find the best way to get through to each person.

My rate for tutoring is $60 per hour. Thanks!

I have a lifeling love of learning, which I love to then share with others. I love that learning builds upon itself, and new concepts unfold like a mystery to be solved. I also love getting to know people and invest in them creating a better future for themselves.

I work as a parent coach during the day, and once a parent who I was working with on behavior strategies for their child found out that I had a masters degree in Education, she asked if I could also tutor.  That was the start and I've loved doing it ever since.

I discuss with a family what their goals are for the student, what subject areas I will be focusing on, and what concerns and roadblocks they've encountered in the past.  I spend time building up from basic skills to more difficult topics, giving the student the confidence of a firm foundation before tacking new ideas.

As a developmental therapist during the day, I specialize in working with children who have developmental delays and disabilities.  But I also work with traditional and gifted students, and really enjoy all students.

Math:  Start with the building blocks.  We can always start and build that foundation and then move on to new concepts.  It's the only way to tackle math.

English:  Read as MUCH as you can.  Being a good reader will make you a good writer.  And tell a good story when you write anything.

Most recently, I worked with a seventh grader teaching him the ideas behind probability.  Because it involves game-playing, these lessons can be a lot of fun.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1.  What are your areas of expertise?

2.  What is your style of tutoring?

3. How much time are you willing to give to a client each week?
