About Karen
Hi! I'm a special education teacher with 6 years experience. Teaching reading is my passion! I have worked with students of all ability levels, from emergent readers to proficient readers. I am ready to meet your child where they are and help them get to where they can be!!
I enjoy seeing my students' confidence grow first and foremost! Some students come to me after years of reading failure and they are completely defeated. Helping them "crack the code" and take off with their reading is what I love most about what I do.
I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois. I hold a valid LBS-1 (Learning Behavior Specialist) teaching license and am certified to work with children K-12. I've been working with students in schools and care facilities in some capacity for 14 years.

I always begin by assessing my students phonological awareness, their letter-sound knowledge, and decoding skills. The first session is also all about getting to know the student and what motivates them in order to keep tutoring fresh and engaging.
