About Samantha
About Me:
I currently teach 7th and 8th Grade English Teacher in Downtown Brooklyn. In addition to my role as a teacher, I also serve as the English Department Chair and Instructional Coach for our Middle School Division. Before my current teaching job, I was a 7th Grade English teacher with the NY Department of Education at M.S. 582 in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
Working in both independent and public school settings has afforded me invaluable experience as an educator, and has shaped me into a teacher who is dynamic, caring, and prioritizes a trusting relationship with my students and their families.
My experiences as a private tutor have been rooted in supporting students with independence and growth in reading and writing for English and Humanities, as well as support with executive functioning. In addition, I have extensive experience preparing students for the NYS ELA State Exam and Regents exams both in the classroom, in after school programs, as well as serving on district grading teams for over three years.
My Teaching Philosophy: I believe that education is what inspires and drives social progress. My responsibility as a teacher is to create a safe and nurturing environment where students are empowered to raise questions, voice their opinions and feel motivated to challenge themselves to grow under my care.
A teacher should hold her students to high expectations so they can envision the endless opportunities that await them through determination, risk taking and hard work. I use my content as a vehicle to fuel critical conversations with my students about the world around them.
My most important priority is my relationships with my students. All students deserve a teacher who is caring and genuine, responsible and structured, but also passionate and excited.
I seek to create a comfortable, authentic environment that fosters personal connections; my students learn best when they know I care about them and their success. I appreciate the opportunity to guide my students towards an understanding of their life’s purpose, their identity, and how they can be of service to the world around them. The most valuable lesson I have learned as a teacher is the importance of how my own cultural experiences come into contact with the experiences of my students and their families. My teaching is responsive and flexible, encompassing the understanding that everyone has different learning styles and it is my responsibility to cater my instruction to meet the needs of every student in the room.
My overall goal as a teacher is to incite a love of learning and challenge in my students; to show humility but also demonstrate leadership and integrity; to ensure clear expectations and consistency. It is my hope that by bringing openness and positivity into the classroom each day, my students will see themselves as agents of change who can recognize and experience their own future success.
There is nothing that brings me more joy than supporting students towards independence and growth in English. I have a track record of changing many students' minds about what they can accomplish, and their perspectives on reading and writing!
I was trained as part of the New York Teaching Fellows Program, and received my Master's Degree in Education (English Grades 7-12) from Relay University. I also hold a Bachelor's Degree in English: Language, Literature and Criticism from Hunter College.
I have over 7+ years of classroom experience teaching English. I also have experience with preparing students for the New York State ELA Exam. In addition to my experience in the classroom, I am also currently a 7th and 8th Grade English Teacher and English Department Chair.

Our first session focuses on getting to know one another. All people learn best when they work with someone they are comfortable with and trust. During our first session, we'll talk about goals we'd like to set during our sessions together. Following each session, I send a detailed report on what we worked on, and goals for our next meeting.
