About Sessen

I am very passionate about teaching and the subjects that I teach. I received a Bachelors of Arts from the University of British Columbia in Honours History with a minor in Sociology. I worked as a teaching assistant at the UBC Department of Sociology where I taught seminars and graded papers for freshman sociology students. During my years in undergradate and graduate school, I have had to constantly flip between the role of being a student and being a teacher. As a result, I have a distinct understanding of some of the challenges that students face.

I've had years of experience working with students on their reading and writing skills at nearly every level (elementary, middle and high school). I work hard to tailor each session to the needs of each student. It is important for me to understand what your interests, strengths/weaknesses and goals so I can provide the best support possible!

I am open to using different platforms and different methods of teaching based on what works best for your learning style. Everyone learns different and its my job to meet you where you are at so you can get the most out of each session.

Put simply, I love teaching. Not only do I love what I study, but I love the act of teaching. I believe there is a big difference between being good writer or scholar and being a good teacher. The experience of breaking down complex topics for students to understand makes me love the subjects I study even more. More than that, the beauty of good teaching is that you can see the ways it can empower others. I often see students get more confident in their writing or reading ability and that confidence starts to bubble over into other parts of their life. It is truly a humbling and inspiring experience to be a part of a student’s learning process— to witness them get more empowered over time. It looks different for every student, but it never gets old for me!

I have a Bachelors of Arts from the University of British Columbia in History and Sociology. I also have a Masters of Arts from Queens University Belfast in Conflict Transformation and Social Justice. This experience has made me very familiar with the material taught in subjects like social studies, language arts, and general humanities subjects. During my time at the University of British Columbia, I have worked as a reading and writing tutor for elementary school students. I also worked as a TA (teaching assistant) for undergraduate introductory sociology courses. These experiences working as a TA, tutor, and in academia has allowed me to have the skills to teach not only a broad range of subjects but also a diverse age group- from elementary school children learning how to read, to high school senior’s applying for university.

Everybody comes to me with different needs and different strengths and weaknesses. When working with a new student- it is important for me to get an understanding of what their goals are and what they are working towards. Maybe you are struggling in a particular class, and you’ve come to me with help for that specific reason? Or maybe you are struggling in a bunch of different classes and the problem is stemming less from difficultly understanding the material, but some broader problems like- organizational and time management skills. Before even meeting with students for our first session, I like to send a message to get an idea of what their situation is, then I spend the first few minutes of the session listening to the student (and parents) explain to me what they hope to get out of our sessions together. It is important that we spell out these goals, these strengths and weaknesses, so that I can get a better understanding of what materials, resources, and strategies I can provide to best help!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I encourage students to really identify where their struggles are. This of course, is something that we can do together- but it is always helpful to do a bit of reflection beforehand.

For example, if you need help in one specific class, look at some of your assignments and test scores. Is there an inconsistency between your graded assignments and your test scores? Do you find that you struggle with taking tests but not with the material you learn in class? Or do you find yourself confused as the class is progressing? It is useful to note these things down because we can work on these weak points together!

If you are a parent looking for tutoring for your child! It is very helpful for me to have an idea of what kind of issues you've been able to identify and what goals we want to accomplish together!

Remember, there doesn't always have to be an issue! Maybe you don't need help with school work and you simply want to improve a skill or learn some new skills! This happens all the time with students seeking supplemental help for reading and writing. Sometimes traditional school work can be very test oriented and it leaves little space for creative writing or essay writing skills to be practiced. If that is what you are looking for, we can absolutely do that too and I can provide my own materials for you!

We've got tons of options here! I just encourage students to do a bit of reflection before hand so we can hit the ground running when we start up!
