First I like to start with an indtroduction. I have us share one fun fact about ourselves and then what something we both enjoy about the subject we will be working on.
I then like to talk about what subject they are working on within thier class. Then ask what about this subject they feel like they are grasping and what they find challenging. This gives me a great starting point to then break down the larger themes within the subject. This makes the information more digestable and tailored to my student.
Overall this process will increase understanding of the subject in their class. This also creates connections between the concepts dicussed in their class. In doing this, my main goal is to instill a genuine interest and excitment for learning.
I've work with a variety of students. I have some expereince working with elemetry students. I've also worked with differently applied middle high schoolers. Lastly, I've worked with college freshmen and sophmores.
Definetly find someone who you respect and can work with. I think thats the most important thing when finding any type of advisor, over which school they studied at and level of education.
