About Renee
My stake in the theatre industry is as a teacher, director, actor, producer, and designer. As someone who has experienced theatre from building sets and obtaining costumes, to producing and directing a show simultaneously, there isn’t much that I haven’t done or been intimately exposed to, most especially on stage.
First and foremost, though, I consider myself a teacher and director. That is what I’ve chosen to dedicate my pursuits toward, and that is what I am most skilled at and most passionate about.
In all my years of teaching and directing, I have found that most actors don’t trust themselves or their choices on stage. It’s hard to say if this is because we are in a time when most directors not only have the final word, but a firm grip on every moment leading up to performance (and sometimes after); or if our Generation X, Y, etc. mores and personas have gotten in our own way.
My approach looks at what you are uniquely bringing to the role. If you are working on the same monologue as other students and actors I am working with, yours is going to be different and just as right and good. We work to keep the writer’s intentions and character in place, while beautifully layering in what you are organically able to bring to it, just with who you are and the choices you wish to make.
Teaching is just one of many steps taken in a journey of acting, directing and producing for Reneé that stretches back over 20 years. Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, she started in the performing world as a runway model. Moving from there to commercial acting, her interest then expanded into all areas of the theatrical arts. Teaching came naturally, and Renee excelled at it, from universities to community centers to private coaching.
Reneé’s acting experience encompasses plays and camera work in New York City, Los Angeles, Idaho, Chicago, Indiana, North Carolina, and San Francisco, where she earned nominations for two of her favorite roles, Vera in Agatha Christie’s Ten Little Indians and Elvira in Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit. She has worked with Lynn Redgrave and Jessica Hecht, among other recognizable notables.
She is also an award-winning director, with critical acclaim for her production of Don’t Dress for Dinner at the Chanticleers Theatre in Castro Valley, earning several prestigious awards including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Production. She apprenticed with Robert Hamm and assisted in directing Marvin’s Room at Ross Valley Players in Marin and Our Town at the Altarena Playhouse in Alameda, and also directed the critically-acclaimed Turn of the Screw in Alameda. While in San Francisco, she helped start the Act Now! Theatre Company, and helped rebuild and market CTA Crossroads Theatre. Both theatres are thriving today with full seasons and subscription rates.
One of her most recent productions was Two Gentlemen of Verona, one of five Shakespeare plays she has directed with Curious Frog Theatre Company, which she founded in 2006. As Executive Producer of Curious Frog, she has produced several plays and events, and has additionally directed four of Toni Seger’s plays. Seger’s Rope of Sands, part of the 2011 Planet Connections Festivity, under Reneé’s direction earned nominations for Best Playwright and Best Actress, as well as Best One-Act Production Set.
Reneé earned her MFA in Acting at Indiana University, where she focused not just on the program and its mandates, but produced and directed plays, and privately coached, and taught both privately and academically at the university level. She has worked as a vocal coach (stage speech) for several years, and also was the Movement Instructor for the apprentice program at Idaho Shakespeare Festival. Her audition workshops have been sold out in every city she teaches them in, and many of her students have been accepted into top graduate acting programs.
Renee is an associate member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.

In a private coaching session with me, students agree to treat sessions as collaborations between themselves and me in order to become a stronger performer, improving and pointing up strengths, and working on underutilized areas and qualities. Students understand that sessions will differ and become disparate, using methods including but not limited to: audition piece rehearsal, piece work, vocal exercises, acting exercises, games, discussions, technique exploration and introduction, “unconventional” methods.
The goal of each session is to increase your skill level and comfort not just with the material you are working on, but with yourself as an actor. You are asked to not only trust me, but to place faith in me, what we are doing, and yourself. You’d be surprised how often you as an actor don’t let yourself do just that.
You’re given homework assignments at the end of each session along with notes, so that the momentum between our weekly, every-other-weekly, monthly, or occasional sessions are fruitful and allow you to come to the next session ahead of the game and ready to progress much more quickly than expected.

Make sure your teacher is not someone who believes in breaking down who you are in order to allow you to become someone different. This kind of teaching often destroys a part of the person's soul.
I love seeing the phenomenal work at New Victory Theatre. They bring magic to life for all ages.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What makes me happiest in the acting industry?
When am I at my best?
When am I most confident?
What would I like to try next?
If not acting, what else would I do instead?
