About Hatem

My inspiration to become a teacher stems from the values of education rooted into my family. These values have taught me that there is nothing more prestigious than the acquisition of knowledge. This philosophy has afforded me a degree in Chemistry and a master’s in Forensic Medical Sciences. Chemistry has always fascinated me; seeing how small alterations in the conditions of a reaction can lead to various outcomes, which is similar to teaching, seeing how the slightest changes in teaching methods can impact on students.

My journey to become a teacher started ten years ago, when I completed a training course to become a GCSE Mathematics and Chemistry tutor at Best Tutors. As a tutor, I was able to pick up essential skills. For example, I understood how time management was important by seeing how my students required adequate time to understand the concepts. I managed time well through meticulous planning and clear explanations of the concepts. Through tutoring, I was able to guide my students by identifying their skills and rectifying their weaknesses whilst simultaneously refining their strengths. Therefore, I aspire to use my energy and passion to develop grit and resilience in my students.

One of the most satisfying aspects of teaching is witnessing my students develop and enhance their problem-solving skills. I have portrayed this by using real life problems that help students understand the problem. I have always encouraged my students to learn from their mistakes and help them understand their misconception to avoid repetition. Part of my tutoring role involved working with students with learning difficulties. This experience allowed me to become more patient, motivating and strategic by employing exclusively personalised teaching methods to accommodate the student’s needs. Through this experience, I believe I have developed into a creative individual, which I believe are essential attributes for being a successful teacher.

Currently, I am working with Horizon Teachers, which is a teaching agency, fulfilling the role of a cover supervisor, mainly for Science classes, which necessitates the responsibilities of a class teacher. In the past, I have spent almost a year working for Engage Education. Although working as a cover supervisor was initially challenging, I was able to adhere to the school policy to minimise disruption within the class setting. For example, I used to make the class line up outside, control dismissals and encourage a positive working environment by managing behaviour. From this experience, I have acknowledged the incredible impact teachers have on the lives of young minds, which entices me to this profession.

Through my desire to teach, it would be an honour to help my students reach their end goal of being a strong, stable and independent adult.

I start from topics the students are comfortable with and move gradually towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I use questions and examples to check understanding continually. I don't lecture to students or ask them to memorise things. Nor do I do the students' homework for them!

My aim as a tutor is to create in my students a deep understanding and confidence in answering exam questions and being able to tackle new and unfamiliar problems. My philosophy is based on the idea that learning happens in an environment of mutual respect in which the student is encouraged to think and make new connections for themselves. My experience has been that one-to-one personal tuition has a unique value to students because of the ability to resolve the students’ personal barriers to learning in a way that lays the foundations for a deep and lasting understanding of the subject.

My approach varies depending on the student’s needs and learning style. However my teaching philosophy is based on encouraging students to think for themselves, using real-world examples wherever possible. I start from topics the students are comfortable with and move gradually towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I use questions and examples to check understanding continually. I don’t lecture to students or ask them to memorise things. Nor do I do the students’ homework for them!

I believe passionately in the huge value of tutoring to students and take great satisfaction in seeing my students achieve their full potential.
