About Jim
Jim worked as a paid public relations writer upon graduating from Northwestern University with a degree in communications; he went on to the Univ. of Southern California for law school and worked in private and public sector law in California for twenty years.
Upon obtaining TESOL certification from UC Berkeley and later, a Master's in Applied Linguistics, he began teaching ESL and legal writing at Columbia, Fordham (undergrad, law and business grad programs) and Pace universities. He currently teaches in the legal writing program at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
Jim really loves working one-on-one with students -- foreign and native-born -- and not only imparts his writing and speaking skills, he also informs his clients about interviewing, test prep and university admissions, having once spent several years assisting administrators in selecting candidates for graduate programs at Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus.

After practicing law and teaching junior lawyers how to write for two decades, I obtained a Master's in teaching English as a Second Language and became a professor and tutor in New York City. I've been teaching in grad and undergrad programs at prominent Manhattan universities since 2005.
I specialize in teaching foreign grad and undergrad students academic English, culture & communication in
American university classrooms, and English for graduate law (LLM) and business (MBA & MA) programs.
AND -- I have also been teaching undergraduate students academic writing -- especially grammar/punctuation, style and research paper writing -- for many years. Most of these students obtain internships and get accepted into their desired Master's and professional (law and business) graduate programs after working with me.
Do you have fears about writing, speaking or using grammar & punctuation in general? I can boost your confidence and help you become more willing to participate in class. If you are an ESL student who wants to work on speaking, I'm also trained in pronunciation & phonetics and have helped many ESL graduate students reduce their accents to a marked degree.
My listening/speaking lessons involve a lot of student participation and practice. Writing, research and test prep lessons introduce a lot of simple tips and examples of 'good writing' that help students understand and eventually intuit better writing skills.
