About Alfie
**I am teaching over the summer! Lessons starting from 19th July 2026 - message me to arrange**
I began teaching maths in the autumn of 2023, having just achieved an A* in A-level maths. Since then, I’ve tutored people online and face-to-face at KS3, GCSE and A-level, and even taught whole class lessons in my former secondary school. I passed my A-level Further Maths with an A* and the highest mark at my school. I’ve also studied the Open University’s free ‘Teaching Mathematics’ course. I’m currently studying Marine Science at the University of Exeter.
I like my lessons to be conversational rather than lectures. While we go through questions, I will be asking you questions and teaching you how to think and work independently. One of the biggest challenges to overcome in maths is confidence, so my approach to teaching is designed to make you feel like you are able to solve difficult problems.

My approach to teaching is inspired by my own maths teacher, who always prioritised understanding over memorising methods. Not only does this approach make lessons much more engaging, but it also gives you the confidence to tackle tricky problems independently. I’ve been tutoring for over 3 years now, and have refined my approach while teaching KS3, GCSE and A-level students. My lessons typically last an hour, but I’m flexible and always happy to deliver shorter or longer sessions depending on your needs.
A typical lesson teaching a specific topic will start with me explaining a maths problem. I like to ask you lots of questions to encourage you to think for yourself and to help me understand how much you already know. We then usually go through some problems together and I will often challenge you to solve some on your own, which will help you build your confidence when it comes to the exams.
Alternatively, when you have an exam coming up soon, we may decide to work through a past paper. I’ll give you a few minutes to try the question independently. If you’re struggling I’ll give you a few hints and pointers, and then we will look through the question together. If it’s a difficult topic, I may give you a similar question to try before we move on.
