About Samuel
Hi. I’m Samuel, an experienced tutor and teacher with an academic background across physics, mathematics, history, and archaeology. I studied Physics at Warwick, Archaeology through Cambridge, and History and Math at UC, and I am currently continuing postgraduate study in History and Archaeology.
What I enjoy most about tutoring is helping students move from confusion to real understanding. I try to make difficult material feel precise, manageable, and even interesting, whether that means breaking down a physics problem, preparing for NCEA exams, strengthening mathematical technique, improving essay structure, or helping with university and Oxbridge-style preparation.
Because my own studies have crossed both the sciences and humanities, I am especially interested in how students think, learn, argue, calculate, and write. My aim is to help students master their course material while becoming more confident, independent, and ambitious learners.

I offer tailored one-hour lessons for students from senior school through to university level, including NCEA, university papers, MAT/PAT preparation, and Oxbridge applications. Lessons can focus on course support, homework, exam preparation, extension work, or deeper subject understanding. I adapt my teaching to each student’s level, goals, and confidence, using clear explanations, worked examples, past-paper practice, bespoke worksheets, and targeted revision.
I have 5 years’ tutoring experience and 3 years’ teaching experience, including MAT/PAT and Oxbridge preparation programs. My academic background includes a BSc in Physics from Warwick, an Undergraduate Diploma in Archaeology from Cambridge, a Graduate Diploma in History with Math from UC, and current postgraduate study in History and Archaeology at UC and Cambridge.

Details
I live on the University of Canterbury Campus, so in-person lessons will be conducted in the Main University Library. I tend to prefer in-person lessons, but can do online lessons.
Weekly homework will be assigned. Like the tutor, students are expected to be on-time, polite, and prepared to learn!
The first lesson is half-price: thirty minutes free, thirty minutes at the normal hourly rate.
Students looking for an English, Classics, or closely-related-subject tutor at a high-level are also welcome to contact me. We can sort something out.
