About Matt
I am a guitarist and improvising musician based in Brighton. My career has spanned over 30 years, and crosses a wide range of musical genres, from blues to folk, rock to jazz and beyond. My current work is more experimental, exploring the random and unexpected within improvisation around twelve tones. There has always been an element of improvisation in all the bands and ensembles I've been involved with, which enables me to think outside the box when creating engaging lesson plans for students. I regularly perform in Brighton and London with a number of collaborators and ensembles, and am a regular participant and member of Brighton’s Safehouse improvised music collective.

I've been teaching a range of students, including those with special needs, for around eight years. I work with a song-based approach, teaching via the music you love the most wherever possible. You don't need to know any theory to get started, but if that's of interest then I will explain how it works by relating it to the songs as we progress. Each lesson is typically 45 mins to 1 hr, depending on the student and the music we're working on at the time. I work with students of all ages and abilities, and hold an enhanced DBS check certificate.
