About Kaya
# About Me
Hello! I'm Kaya, an experienced Chemistry instructor with a passion for teaching and a commitment to fostering a love for learning in my students. With over a decade in education and a strong background in both Chemistry and Environmental Studies, I bring a unique interdisciplinary approach to my teaching. I hold a BS in Chemistry with a concentration in Environmental Chemistry and a BA in Environmental Studies: Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems. My teaching career includes over three years of experience at HTH and PBL Charter schools, where I have honed my skills in project-based learning (PBL) and earned my credential through HTH Graduate Schools credentialing program.
I believe that education should be engaging and relevant, which is why I incorporate what students are passionate and interested in into my lessons. For example, we explore chemistry through real-world projects like investigating water equity issues and analyzing groundwater contamination. These projects allow students to test local water samples for contaminants, research the impact of pollution on communities, and propose sustainable solutions to improve water quality. Such hands-on experiences make chemistry come alive and show its importance in addressing critical environmental challenges.
I also bring a global perspective to my teaching, having lived and worked in Zambia for five years. There, I collaborated with subsistence farmers and managed reforestation initiatives with local agencies. This experience deepened my understanding of environmental issues and sustainability, enriching the context I provide in my lessons. My teaching methods emphasize Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and social-emotional wellness, ensuring a supportive and inclusive environment where every student can thrive. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy exploring sustainable food systems and practicing agroecology, hobbies that further inform and enhance my teaching. I am dedicated to helping my students not only understand chemistry but also see its importance and application in the world around them.

As an experienced Chemistry instructor with over a decade in education, my teaching approach is grounded in project-based learning (PBL) and interdisciplinary methods. I emphasize Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and social-emotional wellness, ensuring each student can achieve their academic goals in a supportive environment. My lessons are student-centered, encouraging active participation through hands-on experiments, group discussions, and real-world projects that integrate various subjects. This method not only helps students grasp complex concepts but also fosters critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
What sets me apart is my interdisciplinary expertise and extensive experience. Holding a BS in Chemistry with a concentration in Environmental Chemistry and a BA in Environmental Studies: Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems, I bring a unique perspective to my teaching. With over three years of experience teaching 10th-grade chemistry at HTH and PBL Charter schools, combined with my credentialing through HTH Graduate Schools credentialing program, I have a solid foundation in PBL. My lessons are designed for high school students, particularly those in 10th grade, who are enrolled in charter, private, or public schools and thrive in an interdisciplinary and project-based learning setting.
