About Akin

I’m a professional 3D Artist with 10 years of industry experience creating 3D assets for film, animation, games, and immersive experiences. My professional career has included working with major studios such as Industrial Light & Magic, Netflix Animation, Blur Studio, and Method Studios, where I worked primarily as a 3D Artist.

My educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture as well as a Certificate of Digital Production from Gnomon, where I concentrated on 3D modeling and texturing.

My primary area of expertise is hard-surface 3D modeling, with extensive experience creating props, environments, set-dressing, and other production-ready assets. I am most comfortable working in Maya, Substance Painter, and Marmoset Toolbag, with intermediate experience in 3ds Max. I am also currently expanding my skills in Unreal Engine 5.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to contribute to a variety of well-known productions. My film credits include Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Ready Player One, and Over the Moon, and I have a game credit on Destiny 2. I have also contributed to VR experiences, including Wizards Take Flight.

One of the highlights of my career was playing a pivotal role in the development of Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Disneyland. Experiences like this have given me an understanding of how 3D assets are created not only to look good, but also to meet the technical and production requirements of real-world projects.

As a tutor, I bring that professional experience directly into my lessons. I understand what it is like to learn 3D from the ground up, and I want to help students develop more than just software skills. My goal is to teach students the fundamentals, workflows, problem-solving techniques, and artistic principles that allow them to become confident and independent 3D artists.

Whether you're completely new to 3D, studying it in school, building a portfolio, or looking to take your existing skills to the next level, I can tailor lessons to your experience and goals.

My lessons are designed to give students practical, hands-on experience in 3D modeling and digital art while helping them develop the skills and problem-solving mindset used in professional 3D production.

My Teaching Approach

I believe the best way to learn 3D is by actually creating things. Rather than simply demonstrating tools and expecting students to memorize steps, I explain why a technique works and when it should be used.

I adapt each lesson to the student's experience, goals, and learning style. We can focus on modeling fundamentals, hard-surface modeling, environmental modeling, topology, UVs, texturing, materials, rendering, or building a portfolio.

I encourage students to ask questions and experiment. When a student makes a mistake, I use it as an opportunity to explain the underlying concept so they can solve similar problems independently in the future.

Typical Lesson

A typical lesson may begin with a short review of what we worked on previously. We then introduce a new concept or technique and I demonstrate the workflow step-by-step.

The student then applies the technique themselves while I provide guidance and feedback. We may work on a specific object, environment, or portfolio project depending on the student's goals.

At the end of the lesson, I review the student's work, identify areas for improvement, and suggest exercises or a project to continue practicing between lessons.

What Sets Me Apart

I bring professional 3D production experience to my teaching. My background includes 3D art, CAD drafting, modeling, visualization, and entertainment/VFX-related work, allowing me to teach both artistic fundamentals and practical production techniques.

I don't want students to simply learn where buttons are located in a software package. My goal is to teach them how professional artists think about modeling, proportions, topology, efficiency, problem-solving, and creating assets that are actually usable in production.

Who My Lessons Are For

My lessons are suitable for:

Beginners who are completely new to 3D modeling
Students currently studying 3D art, animation, game development, VFX, or related subjects
College and university students who need additional guidance with coursework
Intermediate artists looking to improve their modeling skills
Students building a 3D portfolio
Aspiring game artists, VFX artists, and 3D artists
Artists who want to improve their hard-surface or organic modeling
Anyone interested in learning professional 3D workflows

Lessons can be customized around the student's specific software and goals. Whether you're starting from scratch or struggling with a particular 3D project, I can help you understand the process and develop the skills to work independently.
