About Rhys

I have been working full-time as a tutor for over 7 years, since graduating with a First in Linguistics & Spanish from the University of Oxford. My specialities are Spanish at all levels, Linguistics, and university entrance (including many Oxbridge admissions tests). I have worked with over 100 students: some long-term, some for one-day revision programmes. This has been mostly for Spanish and Oxbridge admissions. This is a mix of one-on-one tutoring (in person and online) and small-group sessions at a revision school here in Oxfordshire. Outside work, I'm a hiker, home cook, and snooker player.

Most of my tuition for Spanish is one-on-one, with exams as a focus (this is also the goal of an intensive revision school in which I work). Most students are looking to improve their grade in GCSE/IGCSE, A-Level, IB or Pre-U. For university admissions, I prepare students for tests and interviews, focusing on Spanish and Linguistics, but also for a range of other Arts and Humanities subjects. A typical meeting would depend on our aim - it could be very oral-based for a speaking exam, a brush-up on grammar, a discussion of a literary text or current affairs (for more advanced students), or a mix of all of these. For exam preparation, we will also use the exam specifications as a reference. I like to think of my tuition style as informal, but thorough. I'm lucky that the subjects I teach are inherently interesting, and hope to share that interest with students.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have been interested in languages and linguistics since as long as I can remember - it's something that can captivate from the first moment. As for tuition itself, I fell into it by accident whilst still studying at university - and since I enjoyed it, continuing after uni seemed like a good idea!
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My two main subjects are Spanish and Linguistics. Spanish, as one of the world's biggest languages, is both useful and endless - there's always something fresh to discuss, something interesting going on. As for Linguistics, I think it matches the study of language perfectly - it's the mechanics of what's going on "under the bonnet" when we speak, listen, and read. The crossover for both of these is grammar: how it works, and why, is something I find fascinating. Though there are some parts of language (syntax, and semantics) that do make my head explode!
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Jorge Luis Borges, Argentine author. The way he describes things in his stories is so vivid, so clear - something to try and emulate.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, humour, empathy, and appropriate succinctness.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember the first time I didn't realise I was speaking in Spanish. You can't force it, and you can't expect it - but one day it'll happen. And when it happens, I promise, it'll be one of the best feelings in the world. It's not a goal; it's just something that happens. Something to look forward to.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The only tricky part of languages and linguistics is, to use a word I used earlier, that they are "endless". That's a double-edged sword! Even in my decade of studying Linguistics, for example, there are new techniques, new discoveries, new areas of interest - and nobody has time to know them all! As for Spanish, it's a living, breathing thing - always providing something exciting to look into.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Something I love to discuss (and this appears more in Lingusitics, though we can make comparisons with Spanish) is my particular interest in Old Norse and Modern Icelandic. Every linguist has a "pet" language or a favourite - and those are mine! There's a reason they've held people's interest for over a thousand years.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I have a fantastic beard, if I do say so myself.
