About Katy

I have lots of experience in standardized test prep tutoring. I help students prepare for tests like the GED, ACT, SAT, LSAT, and more! I have over 10 years of experience tutoring all ages in many subjects. I started as a math tutor for college algebra when I was in college. I graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor’s in social work and have tutored a variety of students since. I work with students on study skills, executive functioning, and anything else on their (individualized education plan) IEP.
Each student has a unique way of processing information, and it’s my job to help them identify what that is and how to use it to overcome any challenges in their academic life. Whether it’s dyslexia or dyscalcula, learning disability diagnoses don’t define a student. These labels are only good for identifying that a student processes information differently than the majority of students. I love working with students through their journey of self-exploration to learn how they learn and how to apply it in any mainstream academic setting, so they, too, can experience what the majority of their classmates naturally do.

I began tutoring College Algebra in 2004 part time for a home schooled teenager. At the same time I began helping a non traditional college student returning to finish her college degree after raising a family. I love working with students of all ages and levels.

Over the past few years it has become apparent to me that I connect well with teens and adults. Teens and young adults are at the age most people are taking their ACT, SAT, or GED tests. I love tutoring how to prep for standardized tests because it is unlike any other tests people have taken. Most test about the information and concepts learned in the previous 4-8 weeks. There are, however, subjects like math that will completely depend on having learned the concepts from the past to understand the current concepts. This is similar. The questions are testing one's skills in core subject areas that are derived from the learning objectives throughout K-12th grade. It has nothing to do with memorizing any information, so most peoples’ study habits are useless for standardized tests. It’s applying the patterns and building blocks of information that one has accumulated over their academic life. It may be important to know about grammar rules, for example, but if you can’t use what you know, it won’t help.
Einstein once said,“Never memorize something that you can look up." He wasn't even around for the internet! Instead of remembering 100 individual things, it's so much easier to have the ability or skill set to figure out or calculate each thing.

A prime example is how language has phonics and methods for spelling words. It has semantics, symtax, linguistics, and all these things to help someone figure out what unknown words mean etc. Math has formulas and there's so many different ways to derive information in the world!

I discovered that I work well with all types of learners because I focus on each one of my student's unique ways of thinking. Learning how they learn is the most effective way to start teaching any student.

Everyone processes information in their own way. What is most effective for you, may be ineffective for someone else. I help students learn how to learn. Most students I have worked with have a lot of experience memorizing and cramming, but have no idea how to “learn” the same information. It is actually easier to learn, and unlike cramming, learning takes information into the long term memory, so you can utilize it at any time. Cramming is only good for one test, and as soon as it is over, you can’t remember it anymore. .

Ideally I would exhaust any and all resources at my disposal to understand how a specific client will understand the concepts at hand.

This could include past test results, IEPs, parent or family members perspectives, my various techniques of evaluation both formally and informally, and most importantly, the student. No matter the circumstances, the student will always be the best source for understanding how they learn (regardless if they know it or not!).

I use a student- focused methodology for teaching. Which simply means what I have already said.I base each approach or method of teaching on what works best for the individual WITHIN each of their individual CIRCUMSTANCES.

That second part is very important too. Most students come to me with not much time left before their test date or assignment is due. Life happens and I will adjust to your needs accordingly. I would love to be able to spend more time with everyone and do things the ideal way, but that isn’t very realistic. I am flexible and spend time creating a plan for students to accomplish their goals in the most efficient & effective ways possible. I will also make sure that you are aware of any unrealistic goals. I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t provide options including what to expect from each option, or how much time can be a factor.

I will provide updates on progress made to parents & students. Adult learners can choose if they want anyone else in the loop or not.

The most important thing: I am strengths focused, meaning I will help students access and utilize their strengths to improve in subject areas they have struggled with academically! Every mind has the ability to apply their strengths in any subject to any other subject, to reach a better understanding of concepts they have struggled with.
