About Vicky

Native Greek speaker with over four years’ experience teaching Greek Language, Literature, and History across a range of exam boards and levels, from primary through to GCSE, A Level, and undergraduate.

I have worked as GCSE Examiner at Pearson and have internally assessed more than 100 assignments on Modern Greek Literature and History (undergraduate level). I am delighted to say that my students have achieved A or A* in their exams (references upon request).

Furthermore, I have delivered lessons to more than 10 adults who started Greek from scratch or sought to improve their speaking skills in a more consistent manner.

Teaching Greek as a foreign language has been a part-time occupation of mine over the course of my postgraduate studies. I now seek to transition to full-time tutoring, and I am excited to help more people improve their languages skills in what will be a challenging, yet rewarding, learning experience!

Native Greek speaker with over four years’ experience teaching Greek across a range of exam boards and levels, from primary through to GCSE, A Level, and undergraduate. I like to think of my teaching approach as enthusiastic, trust-based, and student-centred.

Central to my methodology is an understanding that my students, regardless of age, have unique needs, strengths, and areas of improvement, which need to be nurtured and supported in order to get the best possible results. Understanding these unique characteristics, enables me to help my tutees improve their speaking and writing from there onwards.

I speak a very plain Greek dialect and endeavour to speak slowly and articulate clearly, so that students progress swiftly and benefit from each lesson. I have taught in multicultural groups of students and I leverage diversity and cultural-specific references to enhance learning and, when pertinent, teamwork.

Our introductory lesson offers an opportunity to get to know each other and for me to find out what your learning motivation and level.

For conversational classes, I focus on building confidence and tutees’ speaking and writing skills. Over the years, I have developed my own resources and materials for active learning, which include but are not limited to video, audio, flashcards, quizzes and other. I do not rely solely on textbooks but use them as guiding point when necessary. Each lesson introduces new vocabulary and focuses on a certain topic. You will be sent a worksheet in advance, which we will use during the lesson, and which you can always go back to revise.

With regard to GCSE, AS, AL classes, I am familiar with the various syllabus and the exam boards requirements. I possess a range of resources and methods and a very adaptive teaching approach which can be tailored to individual needs and levels. I seek to strengthen core skills and technical knowledge of the language by approaching the text word-by-word, explaining grammar, syntax, and vocabulary from a morpheme to paragraph level. My overall aim is to combine a pragmatic approach to exam practice using past papers, whilst instilling a passion for Modern Greek language and culture to my tutees.

More about me?

As an undergraduate student, I studied Classics and Modern Greek Language. At a postgraduate and doctoral level, my interests veered towards the study of Modern Greek Literature and History in comparative context. Throughout my studies I constantly strived to excel. I achieved First Class Honours grade for my BA (Athens) and MA (Oxford).

I have been awarded numerous grants for academic excellence from prestigious institutions and funding bodies such as the University of Oxford, the University of Birmingham, the American School of Classical Studies, and the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation. These recognitions are testament to my lasting enthusiasm for Modern Greek, which I am passionate about passing onto my tutees in inspiring and engaging ways.

I am member of the Society for Modern Greek Studies and since 2016 I have coordinated a wide range of academic, social, and public engagement events promoting the teaching of Modern Greek and celebrating aspects of Modern Greek literature and cultural production.

As a tutor, I am focused on ensuring each of my students understands how they will best reach their goals. As a qualified, enthusiastic, and focused tutor, I am always committed to my students’ well-being and academic excellence.
