About Verity

Hello, I'm Verity. I am a 26 year old Master's student at UCL currently studying towards an MSc in The Psychology of Education at UCL.

I have a huge passion for education and improving the ways we teach for all ages. I started tutoring after I finished my undergrad degree as a way to make some money and happily discovered how much I loved it. As I am a student learning about educational psychology, I am also studying about different ways people learn and understand information which is fascinating.

I have been tutoring both privately and voluntarily for the past 4 years for a variety of ages and skill levels. I have had great success in supporting my students to improve their grades and confidence. However, what I ultimately really want is for my students to enjoy our lessons and hopefully be motivated to learn.

What ages do I teach?

I have worked with students from 9-16 years old. I have taught KS2, KS3, GCSE, iGCSE and 11+. I currently teach online which I would recommend for 10/11 upwards for optimal concentration.

What is my tutoring style?

I believe creativity and adapting to each student's individual differences is the key to motivating them. Every student has a type of learning that works best for them, but unfortunately, a typical classroom cannot adapt a lesson to be optimal for every single student's needs. That is why 1:1 tutoring can be so beneficial, especially for those struggling. I want all of my students to feel they can ask me for what they need and I encourage them to think about their own strengths and weaknesses in order to have the most productive sessions possible.

What can you expect from me?

The first session I have with any student is usually very introductory and exploratory. We will do an overview of the curriculum and I will make a list of the areas to work on from lowest ability to mid-ability. I will also ask my student what it is that they want to work on, and also where they feel they excel in Maths (or 11+ work). If the student currently has an estimated grade given to them by their teacher, I will also make note of this and find out what grade they aim to achieve. In general, I aim to see an improvement of 2 -3 grades higher by the end of a year of teaching, but this depends on their current level.

After the first session, we will start on the list from the areas the student most struggles with. I will start with the basics of each topic and increase the difficulty where appropriate, building confidence in my student. Each lesson will start with a 10-15min recap of the previous session, but sometimes this is too little or too much time - again, it's about adapting to suit the student's needs!

I am happy to set homework if that is requested as well.

What are my qualifications?

2:1 MA (Hons) Philosophy and Mathematics - The University of Edinburgh

A-Levels: A*AAB (Including A* in Mathematics)
GCSEs: 7A*, 2As, B (Including A* in Mathematics)
