About Mary
Welcome to my profile! I'm coming back to private tutoring after a ~3 year break to pursue a PhD in Statistics within the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. I'll be taking students from January (when I'll complete my PhD), with super flexible timings through the Spring term and ongoing support as needed!
Teaching experience:
I started tutoring 7 years ago during my undergraduate degree in Mathematical, Statistics and Actuarial Sciences (Heriot-Watt University) and taught over 300 hours of mathematics to students ranging from 5 to 17! During my fourth year of university, I also taught second-year mathematics tutorials (selected as one of the university’s 'best and most suitable students').
I then taught extensively throughout my PhD at the University of Edinburgh - teaching both undergraduate and Master's courses in Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science and recently extending my contract to teach part-time. I also co-founded a national initiative to address the participation crisis of women and non-binary students in mathematics post-degree programmes, mentoring and inspiring young people to continue their journey in mathematics.
Academic background:
I obtained a first-class honours degree in Mathematical, Statistical and Actuarial Sciences at Heriot-Watt University. Excelling in my studies, I was awarded the Deputy Principal’s Award for Academic Excellence two years in a row and was offered a graduate job as a Pensions Actuary with PricewaterhouseCoopers, for which candidates undergo an extensive selection process. I decided, instead, to continue my studies and pursued a PhD in Statistics at the University of Edinburgh.
I’m due to complete my PhD in early January and have achieved an official rating of ‘Outstanding’ for all years of my PhD, along with publications of my new work in Statistics! I’m looking at academic positions alongside teaching for the future, but I am keen to get back to tutoring first – I really enjoy it!
An important part of my story, and one I bring to my teaching, is my struggle with confidence in mathematics. There were various people throughout my academic journey that have inspired and encouraged me, and have been pivotal in my confidence to continue – and this is inherent in my approach to teaching!

My approach to tutoring is engaging and encouraging, and I pride myself on being friendly! I’ve seen many students over the years really struggle with confidence in mathematics (including myself) – and know that it can feel absolutely insurmountable at times. I like to inspire students and give them the confidence (and conceptual understanding) they need to succeed.
