About Piers
I'm a final-year Economics student at the University of Exeter, predicted a First and awarded a School's Commendation for finishing in the top 10% of my year.
Alongside my degree I've spent a year working in financial services audit at Grant Thornton and completed a summer internship at an investment consultancy, and I'm heading towards a career in investment consulting. That work is quantitative and deadline-driven, and it's shaped how I teach. I'm less interested in students memorising a method than in them being able to look at an unfamiliar problem and work out where to start, because that's the skill that actually carries beyond the exam.
I started tutoring three years ago, initially with an agency and for the past year through my own practice. What keeps me doing it is the specific moment where something that's been frustrating a student for weeks suddenly makes sense. Most students I work with aren't struggling because they can't do the subject; they're struggling because one foundational idea didn't land properly a year ago and everything built on top of it feels unstable. Finding that gap and fixing it is the part I enjoy.
I'm patient, I don't rush, and I'd rather a student tell me they're lost than nod along. Sessions are relaxed but structured, and I'm always happy to speak to parents about how things are going.

I teach Maths, Chemistry and Economics at A-level and IB, and Maths and the sciences at GCSE. Lessons suit students from Year 9 upwards, including those resitting exams they weren't happy with.
I've been tutoring for three years, spending two of those with a tutoring agency before setting up my own practice, and I've worked with eleven students in that time. I'm in my final year of a BSc in Economics at Exeter, predicted a First, and I took Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Economics at A-level with A grades in Maths, Chemistry and Economics, alongside ten grade 9s at GCSE. I've sat the same papers my students are preparing for, which means I know where the marks are actually lost rather than just how the content works.
Most sessions run an hour, though A-level and IB students often prefer ninety minutes so we can work through a full past paper section without rushing. The first lesson is diagnostic: I'll work through a few problems with the student to find where their understanding breaks down, then plan from there rather than working blindly through the syllabus.
After that, my teaching is built around past papers and mark schemes. Plenty of students can follow a method in class but freeze when a question is phrased unfamiliarly, so we practise real exam questions together and then unpick exactly what the examiner was rewarding. I set a short piece of work between sessions so progress carries over rather than resetting each week, and I'm happy to keep parents updated on what we're covering and how their child is getting on.
