About Edward
Have you ever wondered why witchcraft became so popular in early modern Europe? Or why we do not know about the thinking of less educated individuals found in smaller towns and villages? So far, the rationale driving forward persecution merely scrapes the surface, and the writings of educated individuals do not describe the situation with any degree of adequacy. That is where I have come in. Using for the first time early modern English plays as historical sources, I specialise in how the 'less educated' individuals understood magic, witchcraft, trade, travel, and religion, uncovering a nuanced and sophisticated approach to English literature and early modern political and social history. At the age of 28, I have produced six articles in peer-reviewed journals, and a book is forthcoming. I have taught at venues including Bristol, the University of South Wales, and Oxford for four years, acquiring a nomination for 'Best Lecturer' within six months of tenure at my most recent institution. I want to introduce historical ideas and methodologies in engaging ways, encouraging you to come up with your own ideas. Structuring Oxford-based tutorials in the place of traditional lessons, I am interested in what YOU may think about these concepts, ideas, and methodologies! I look forward to meeting you!

Drawing from my nine-year career in higher education, my lessons are discussion-focused; each lesson takes the form of a 1-to-1 conversation about a topic. Following a typical university seminar, these lessons establish a mutual learning process, and I encourage my students to prepare well for each lesson. These lessons, following the Oxford tutorial system, require students to research topics between classes, developing an independent line of enquiry that can be used in subsequent tasks. They do not require students to memorise vast lists of dates: it is the capacity to think thematically and the capacity to think in original ways that counts! I have a PhD in history and English literature from the University of Bristol. I have also worked as a lecturer in history at the University of South Wales, acquiring a student nomination for 'Best Lecturer' within six months of tenure. I am also FHEA accredited. On the side, I have eight years' experience as a tutor in academic writing, working for Studiosity Plc. as a senior academic specialist. Lessons, covering English literature, poetry, witchcraft, politics, and trade in the early modern world, go on for an average time of an hour. They suit GCSE, A-level, and undergraduate level (ages 16 - 21).
