About Andrew
My online lessons are designed to build confidence in mathematics, drawing on my experience teaching key stages 3 and 4 (ages 11-16) in large secondary schools. This may start from filling in the gaps in basic knowledge or providing an opportunity to practise and embed weaker topics, up to challenging questions to develop a wider understanding of mathematics and its structure. I also have experience and a passion for improving adult numeracy, including leveraging the power of Excel. Most of my career has been in finance, so I like to draw upon real-life examples wherever possible to show the relevance of mathematical skills. However, mathematics is also about learning general strategies for problem-solving and even the most abstract problems should be approached in this positive way, turning “I don’t understand” into “What do I know?” and “I can’t do this” into “What can I do?” With a first-class honours degree in mathematics I bring a life-long passion and enthusiasm for the subject and a will to pass that enthusiasm to a new generation of students. My style of teaching is focused, but relaxed and unpressured, allowing students to progress at a pace suited to them. I have a PGCE in secondary education and qualified teacher status. Due to work commitments I am currently only available weekend evenings.
