About George

I have professional experience in Munich, Germany, where I used my fluent spoken and written German. Since then, I have used my expertise to tutor groups as a volunteer as well as individual students privately. I believe that, having mastered the language myself, I am particularly well positioned to both guide and inspire others who wish to do the same.

Each student is an individual & therefore I am sure to understand their goals and motivations before creating a tailored plan for us. I am also a firm believer in encouraging the student to become comfortable expressing themselves & making mistakes from day one.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I studied German at university in the UK and after graduating, I worked in Munich, Southern Germany, where I put my language skills to good use. I found living abroad to be an incredibly rewarding and enriching experience and I strive to inspire others to do the same.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I would say a good representative of German culture would be Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press. This is because he embodies the German culture of excellence in engineering, which has enabled many innovations. One such innovation was the printing press, which was revolutionary in changing the world by increasing literacy and allowing ideas to spread, such as the Protestant Revolution.

  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

“Deutsche Sprache, Schwere Sprache” which translates to “German language, hard language” is a phrase German speakers use to acknowledge the challenges of learning their language. This is because German grammar can be particularly difficult. However, once mastered, it can be very satisfying. That is why we tutor!

  •
4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

I have always had a particular admiration for the German mentality for doing things thoroughly, logically and precisely. Perhaps this is because I have a background in engineering. I therefore find it very rewarding to speak this language in different settings. I also love to ski so speaking German certainly comes in handy on the slopes in Austria!

  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The most difficult part of learning German is probably the grammar as it is relatively complex. However, with a good tutor, resources, time (and patience!), I believe anyone can learn this to the point it becomes second nature.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

On one flight to Munich, I noticed the passenger sat next to me was reading a book in German. I sparked up a conversation, simply because I wanted to practice. We chatted the whole flight - we had many similar interests. We exchanged numbers and started meeting up for coffee regularly. Eventually we became friends and are still close to this day. Learning a language can be incredibly useful but also valuable in making life-long connections that you never expected!
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Living and working in Germany played a key part in increasing my skill and knowledge of the language. This was due to ‘full immersion’ where I lived and breathed the language, speaking it more than my mother tongue. I started thinking and dreaming in German. I do not think this would have been quite possible, had I not lived in the country.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

I have experience in tutoring at all levels, from teenagers to adults, from complete beginners to those looking to learn German for their career. I also have taught individually and to larger groups. However, I would say most importantly, having mastered the language myself, I am particularly well positioned to both guide and inspire others who wish to do the same.
