I would structure my classes around themes; first establishing the students difficulties, we would approach each theme with an integration of theory and practicality. For example, the theme may be ethnicity in Nazi Germany wherein we would summarize the key points creatively (through Kahoot or a mind-map, perhaps) then discuss how we would approach a specific essay question relating to the theme with the student writing the essay for feedback in the next lesson. This would ensure the student memorizes key points and is developing the skill of analysis and essay writing.
