About Michelle

Hey future students! My name is Michelle, and I am a dynamic and compassionate English Tutor and Teaching Assistant with 5 years of experience supporting diverse learners from elementary to adult education. I am skilled in creating engaging ESL lessons, facilitating small group activities, and fostering positive learning environments that encourage student confidence and participation. I also bring more than five years of complementary experience in social work, program delivery, and advocacy for vulnerable people, equipping learners with both academic tools and self-advocacy skills to thrive in life. With a Bachelor of Arts in Equity Studies and Women & Gender Studies and a Master of Arts in Criminology, I bring a unique perspective that values diversity, patience, and encouragement in every lesson. In addition to my 5 years of teaching English, I also completed a 2-year research project in 2024 that explored the educational experiences of 245 students, ages 12-17, across Ontario's middle schools and high schools. This research was funded by the government of Canada (Women and Gender Equality Canada) and highlighted how different teaching styles affect students' learning experiences. This brings a unique perspective to how I teach and engage with students in my classrooms. I love theory, designing inclusive, culturally responsive curriculum and leveraging strong communication, research, and facilitation skills to meet the unique needs of students from vulnerable and multilingual backgrounds. As I'm committed to advancing both educational success and holistic well-being, personal development is always a priority. I love dancing, swimming, exercising, and using physical movement as a way to maintain good mental health - setting a positive tone for myself and the classroom.

English

Learning English doesn’t have to be stressful. With me, it’s an adventure — full of stories, games, songs and real conversations.

I use Total Physical Response — for example, using gestures and actions — so students can easily connect words to meaning. I believe in scaffolding, which means breaking down lessons into smaller, simple steps so learners always feel supported.

I also use phonics practice to strengthen reading and pronunciation, along with repetition and modelling, where I demonstrate language first and then encourage students to practice. Most importantly, my approach is student-centred and I use lots of positive reinforcement to keep learners motivated and excited.

For example, if I were teaching the word ‘apple’, I would say: ‘This is an apple. An apple is red. Let’s say it together: APPLE!’ I like to use visuals, repetition, songs, and lots of encouragement so students feel motivated to learn.

I could also use this example to demonstrate how students can ask a question, for example:

“What is your favorite fruit? My favorite fruit is an apple. How about you?”

I like to use props, gestures, and questions to make lessons interactive and fun.

I believe every student can succeed in English with patience and practice. I would love to be part of their learning journey.

My goal is simple: to help you feel proud every time you speak in English — whether it’s in school, at work, or while travelling.

I believe every student can succeed. With patience, practice, and positivity, you will be amazed at how quickly your English improves!
