About Marjolein

I am passionate about languages and how it allows me to meet and know people from all over the world. I love uplifting people and sharing my knowledge and skills to help them achieve their goals and dreams. I am currently learning South Korean. I love traveling, the outdoors, animals and being creative. I have a Bachelor's degree in Afrikaans / Nederlands and German and a Master's degree in Psychology. I have more than 20 years experience in HR and Life Coaching. I have been a tutor for many years and take a real interest in my students. This lets me adapt the lesson to their level, goals and interests.

About the lesson

My lessons are relaxed and informal. I like to keep things easy and simple. I focus on relevant language skills that you can use in real life situations. I use engaging conversations and fun, interactive exercises. I offer supportive, encouraging feedback and correct pronunciation and grammar where needed with suggestions for improvement. I give clear explanations with specific examples.

I have a special place in my heart for literature in all its forms. I love helping students improve their understanding of and engagement with literature. I have had great success with helping Matrics raise their overall marks by improving their literature and writing skills. Literature is to be enjoyed - not feared or hated!

I am proficient in English, Afrikaans and Dutch.

I teach students from all levels. I will help you become more fluent and proficient, sound more natural and improve your vocabulary. I assist with listening, speaking, writing and reading skill improvement.

I use PayPal for my international clients. To accommodate the extra administration fees and exchange rate changes, I charge a flat fee of 20 Euros for a 1 hour lesson.

I offer a discounted rate for South African Grade 11 and 12 students of R300 per 1 hour lesson.

When did you develop an interest in your subject and in private tutoring?
I have had a passion for people and languages from a young age. I loved travelling to other countries with my parents and getting to know people from different cultures and the languages they speak. Language is what brings us together and reminds us we are all inherently the same.
Tell us more about the subjects you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
I teach languages (English and Afrikaans), life coaching (counselling and psychology) and energy healing (Reiki, Reflexology and Aromatherapy). I love talking about people's passions, what makes them "tick" and puts a smile on their faces - their interests, dreams and goals. I stay away from discussing politics, religion, economics and the like.
Do/Did you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher that inspired you?
I had a History teacher in high school that inspired me with his passion for teaching. He had the ability to make things come alive and relevant by telling stories. He made things easy to grasp and remember.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Patience, a love for people and languages, respect and empathy. It helps to put things simply and easy to understand.
Share an anecdote related to your subject or your schooldays.
After finishing high school, I left Holland and came to South Africa. I was always told how similar Dutch and Afrikaans were. Well, that is very untrue. I struggled learning Afrikaans and know very well the humiliating frustration that comes with being a foreigner in a country having to learn a new language and fitting in all at once. Many were the times that I was laughed at because I said something "wrong" or inappropriate. This has given me much patience and empathy with anyone learning an additional language.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced at school?
I spent my early years in South Africa and moved to Holland when I was 9. I was not a native Dutch speaker and often made grammatical and spelling errors. Coming back to South Africa as a young exchange student, I had forgotten all my Afrikaans and went through the same process again! Making a language fun, easy and applicable is the best way to learn a new language I have found.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?
I love getting to know people, sharing experiences, uplifting them and helping them improve themselves and their lives. Language allows us to do all of that and more. It brings us together and allows us to touch someone's life. It helps us express who and what we are - from ordering coffee with a friend to whispering words of love to figuring out how the world works.
What makes you a Superprof?
I love the freedom Superprof gives. It allows a tutor a wide spectrum of subjects they can tutor. I take a real interest in my students and this allows me to tailor make a lesson to suit a student using my own preferred platform and resources. I prefer to keep things simple and easy to understand and will use a variety of tools and resources to give my students what they need. I go the extra mile for my students and belief that support and encouragement is much more important in building self-confidence and fluency in a language than grammar and phonetical rules. There is a place and time for everything.
