About Anna
I have taught introductory and advanced English courses at universities, along with tutoring high school to graduate-level college students with all major, primary areas of English courses. I hold a Master of Arts in English degree, and I have worked as a technical writer (grammar and format-intensive).

For teaching reading comprehension, my primary approach is to ensure students have a steady grasp on what is expected of them from the assignment.
I read the pieces alongside them to clarify any problematic areas and to help smooth any rough/confusing portions. I coach students through themes, symbolisms, metaphors, and other literary devices to dig into the core of the assigned readings and deepen textual comprehension.
If the student does not have a particular piece assigned, I will provide a few short stories or articles, and then go through the pieces step-by-step. (The essays, stories, and/or articles selected should, hopefully, be at least entertaining to the reader, as opposed to dry academic bits.)
I will go through the highlights of the work, then gradually encourage the student to identify its core elements.
This is an exercise that allows students to begin with easy identifications ("What happened in the story?'), then move to more in-depth analyses ("What is the writer trying to say about the state of the world?"; "What might this character represent?"; "What grand theme ties the story together?")
This type of practice can be taken as slowly as necessary, depending on the student's comfort level with the material: I'm not going to start flinging hard questions at you out of nowhere! :-)
I am passionate about aiding students with understanding a work, regardless of how insurmountable the writing may seem upon first reading.
Whether dealing with a particular assignment(s) or seeking help comprehending and delving into literature as a whole, I am ready to help you grasp it.

Ms. Spann was a college professor of mine for 2 separate courses. She managed to keep me interested in a college subject that I detested all through high school. She is one of the most understanding and accommodating people I have ever met in my life. She is an amazing person with a unique personality that firmly grasps the attention of her students. I am eternally grateful for the chance to be one of her students.
As her professor in various upper division college writing courses, I've observed Anna contribute to many intensive critique sessions. She always tactfully approached the assessment of the work of her peers with unusual insight and with generosity towards their work. She was able to articulate complex ideas with clarity and precision. Anna is one of the brightest students I've taught in a long career, and I'm certain of her abilities as a teacher and tutor. I recommend her without reservation. She's funny, smart, cool, kind and humble.
Anna is a brilliant, talented, inspiring wordsmith. Her wit and compassion make her an outstanding teacher, tutor, and friend. You won't be disappointed.
Creative, dedicated, and super smart! Anna and I have known each other for over fifteen years. We have been friends and classmates. She has also helped me edit a number of papers. I know Anna is a capable and trustworthy teacher; in addition to her skills in writing and grammar, she is a good listener, and creative enough to communicate ideas in ways that are easy to understand.
