About Hannah
Raised by two teachers I have always believed in the importance of education and have always taught alongside whatever else I am doing in my life and career.
I studied English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford and since then have been working as a tutor in Bristol, London and internationally online. In whatever subject I am teaching I believe passionately in the importance of hard work and instilling in my pupils a love for the accumulation of learning and knowledge for its own sake: to enrich the individual as well as helping them pass their exams. I am highly driven and believe in striving to always achieve your absolute best, and I work hard to pass this outlook on to my students. I forge a personal and professional relationship with those I teach so that learning becomes a pleasure, not a chore.
I love teaching and embrace the new challenges it throws at me daily. I hope I am offering something you may find valuable and I look forward to hearing from you.
My own specialisms at University were:
- Print culture and the works of Oscar Wilde
- 1970s Chaos Theory in Physics and its intersection with narrative structures in Post Modern American Literature of 1970s
- Linguistics of homosexual sub-cultures, 1900-1980

I am a graduate of English Language and Literature from the University of Oxford and have been tutoring English since 2014. I believe in the power of language and words in society and love to share this passion with my students at all levels.
I run a IGSCE course and thus am extremely well acquainted with the rigours and level for GCSE studies. I have also supported students across many of the GCSE boards and am extremely well acquainted with the set texts and ready to support students in whatever way required to help them achieve their very best in the exam framework.
I have worked with a number of students throughout the course of their GCSE, A level and IB preparation, working with them to improve their response to and analysis of the texts studied. I am well acquainted with the vast majority of texts on the UK exams boards and have taught the vast majority including Romeo and Juliet, Jekyll and Hyde, Animal Farm, 1984, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Of Mice and Men, and many more. Please be in touch with me if you are looking for help with a specific text. I offer help with coursework and undergraduate essay dissertations through discussion and proofreading. In the past I helped students work on the following dissertation titles:
- The monster and the maker in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and HG Well's The Island of Doctor Moreau.
- Nietzschean Anti heroism in Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and "The White Tiger" by Aravind Adiga.
- Comparisons between Emily's Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" and Khaled' Hosseini's "A Thousand Splendid Suns".
- Toxic Masculinity in Chuck Palahniuk's "Fight Club" and the works of T.S. Eliot
I am also very well-placed to offer general essay structuring and grammar support.

Hannah has massively helped me with my GCSE English literature papers. She started tutoring me not long before my exams and she has had a major impact in preparing me for them. Helping me to understand texts and and pick out key details that I was missing before. I would strongly recommend for students needing support and help with GCSEs.
After applying to read English Literature and Language at Oxford, I came across Hannah Bristow on a tutoring website and have had dozens of sessions with her in aid of my Oxbridge application. Hannah's advice was invaluable, and she has improved not just my writing for the admissions test but my essay technique in general. Furthermore, she gave me interview practice showing me the level of debate I would be expected to engage in, which was not only useful but actually very enjoyable. Hannah is a lovely person who is easy to get along with, not to mention a very efficient teacher; returning my essays to me marked often on the same day I submitted them to her. Overall, I am entirely content with my tutoring experience with her and am very grateful for all of the support she provided me with.
Hannah was really helpful in providing in depth detail on how to approach the exam and supported me with a number of resources including past papers and advice booklets. She was also very friendly, reassuring and provided a lot of general advice about university admissions and life at Oxford.
We were fortunate to meet Hannah quite late in the 11+ process, as we set off to find an inspiring teacher who would get the best out of our daughter in the short run up to the exams.
Hannah demonstrated more than we could have hoped for- a precious combination of deep subject matter expertise in English combined with a unique, coaching approach. My daughter couldn't wait for her lessons with Hannah, and he confidence level rocketed.
I wish we met Hannah earlier and had her tutor our chicks from the start. We engaged Hannah to help our son with his grammar school entrance exams. Hannah was an excellent, and inspirational, tutor and really engaged well with our son, encouraging him and also challenging him to think about the questions and work at formulating his own answers. He enjoyed and looked forward to his sessions with Hannah and she was a pleasure to deal with throughout.
Hannah has been tutoring my two sons over the last month. Our older son is preparing for 13+ Common Entrance, whilst the younger one (aged 10) is preparing for independent school admission pre-tests (11+ level). Hannah’s was able to quickly develop a good rapport with both boys. She is friendly, but firm, and the boys respond to her and our keen to do work she sets for them. Her focus has been English for our older son, and English, Verbal and Non-verbal reasoning for our younger son. Hannah comes prepared for every session, taking them through the syllabus and past questions during lessons, and setting them homework. In a short space of time we have seen improvements in our boys work. We would most definitely recommend Hannah to other parents looking to prepare their children for Common Entrance / Admission test for secondary school.
