About Imre
Good writing is not a talent some students are born with. It is a set of steps, and every one of those steps can be taught.
I graduated from high school in Coquitlam this June and I start at Simon Fraser University this fall. I was on the honour roll every year, and I earned an A in English 11, English 12, Creative Writing 11 and Creative Writing 12. Outside of class I competed with my school's Debate Club and Model United Nations team, and I was a member of the Ethics Club. Those years of arguing a position under pressure are where I learned how to build a point and defend it, which is exactly what I teach my students to do on paper.
I tutor students in Grades 3 to 8 in reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, essay structure and creative writing. I also work with students learning English as an additional language, and with students who simply need someone patient to sit with them and go through the homework their class moved past too quickly.
Personally, I think the reason English frustrates so many students is that nobody ever showed them the structure underneath it. A paragraph has a shape. An essay has a shape. Once a student can see the shape, the blank page stops being intimidating. My job is to make that structure visible, then step back gradually until they can build it themselves.
I finished the BC curriculum a few weeks ago, not a few decades ago. I know the assignments your child is being given and the rubrics their teacher is marking against, because I was being marked against them this spring. I am also close enough in age that students tend to admit what they do not understand instead of pretending. That honesty is where the actual progress starts.
A note for parents: you are welcome to sit in on any session. I keep parents included on all scheduling and messages, and in-person lessons take place at the Coquitlam Public Library, a community centre, or your home with a parent present. I would rather you have complete visibility than take my word for anything.
The first lesson is free, so you can find out whether your child works well with me before you spend anything at all.
Strong writing opens doors in every subject a student will ever take. I would like to help your child open them.

Who I work with:
I tutor Grades 3 to 8, elementary and middle school. That includes early readers building phonics and comprehension, students learning English as an additional language, students preparing for essays, book reports, projects and unit tests, and students who are already doing fine but want to write with more confidence.
What I teach:
Reading comprehension, grammar and sentence structure, vocabulary, spelling, paragraph and essay structure, thesis statements, editing and revision, book reports, creative writing, and presentation skills.
How a session runs:
Every lesson follows the same four-part structure, because consistency is what makes students relax.
1. Warm-up. A short reading passage, a vocabulary review, or a quick discussion to see where the student is starting from that day.
2. Guided practice. I teach one specific skill and we work through it together, step by step, with immediate feedback.
3. Independent practice. The student applies the skill on their own while I watch and prompt only when needed. This is the part that makes the learning stick.
4. Recap. A two-minute review of what we covered, so they leave able to name what they learned.
How I teach:
I am patient and I do not rush. Students in my sessions are allowed to be wrong out loud, which is the only way anyone learns to write. I give specific feedback rather than general praise, and I point out exactly what improved since the last session so the student can see their own progress.
What you get as a parent:
A free first lesson with no obligation. A short written note after each session covering what we did and what to practise. Flexible scheduling, including evenings and weekends. Lessons online over video, or in person in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody.
Progress in writing is slow and then sudden. My job is to keep a student working steadily through the slow part.

Perfect! Understands how to teach depending on skill level and plans accordingly! He taught my younger brother ways to improve his grammar even after the session and we will be getting more sessions soon. Patient with kids and taught with an exciting and engaging lesson!

Imre helped my younger brother catch up to the rest of his peers over the course of a few weeks, working at his level and pushing him to gain a better understanding of grammar. I am very happy that my brother no longer struggles as much in his English class! His strong focus on helping my brother build skills to write as an individual worked great for him.
