I graduated with a First-class Honors degree in English and psychology and currently work as a communications coordinator at Nestlé. I have clear memories from my own time as a student in which the teacher requested that we perform seemingly mindless and mundane tasks. I’m sure they fit neatly into the lesson plan, but they didn’t seem to serve any real purpose. The point of reading the selection was to check comprehension. Why would I care to read about this character, let alone prove my comprehension of his literary adventures by regurgitating the tale? I believe most students feel the same way.
Learning can be much more meaningful and motivating if it actually serves a purpose. As such, I try to incorporate the background and interests of each culture represented among my students in my lessons. This demands that I get to know them on a personal level, too.
Doing this not only engenders a sense of familiarity and purpose, but it also sends a message that my students are valued.
