About Rowen
My teaching is informed by my experience working for various different companies and individuals (EdTech, Language Schools, Entrepreneurs, Lawyers, Architects and TV producers) and my background in the arts. I'm an actress, singer-songwriter and writer* and I bring my creative and intelligent approach to my lessons to help my clients not only succeed in reaching their goals but enjoy doing it! I'm also a native English speaker with a southern English accent (not RP but a BBC Radio 4 standard) which isn't regional nor distinctly London, despite living in London for many years.
I tailor my lessons to fit what my students most need. My clients have always appreciated the extra time put in to deliver a lesson that best suits their learning style as well as covering the content they most need.
My own preferences as a student of languages myself (I speak French (C1) German (B1) Czech (B1) and Spanish (A2) and now I'm learning Gujarati) inform how I teach to ensure the most efficient progress towards your goals.
My focus is always on the PURPOSE behind each part of our sessions together so that no time is wasted. I use different approaches to ensure you get the full range of knowledge and skill that you personally need to feel confident, without getting stuck or overwhelmed.
My free trial lesson is a chance to sample my teaching style, discuss your goals and interests and see if we are a good fit for working together. If I find that you need expertise which isn't a match with my own, I can also offer suggestions for other tutors to contact or people to be in touch with to find out how best to achieve what you need.

*My acting credits include performances at Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester, a short film filmed in Bournemouth and screened at the BFI and a short film festival in Cannes and a role speaking in German in a Danish TV film being shot in the Czech Republic. My music credits include BBC Radio 6 Music airplay, performances in London and elsewhere in the UK as well as in NYC and my writing culminated in a book of poetry that I published and launched in 2017 and from which I ran creative writing workshops online and in NYC and Manchester.

Do you need coaching support to build rapport with colleagues, deliver successful presentations or communicate clearly in problem-solving situations? Are you an Upper Intermediate or Advanced level speaker? I can help you!
With my experience as an actor and a freelance customer service manager, I know how to prevent these problems with a careful focus on the meaning created in spoken language that's not always obvious.
My lessons are tailored to what you need most.
I plan what we do in each lesson so that even if you have very little time to go over the work we did, I can remind you of the most important new vocabulary and words for pronunciation that came up from prior sessions.
Unlike other English tutors, I make notes on words and phrases you repeatedly make mistakes with so that we can work together to remove the problem areas while also building on your strengths.
You can choose the focus of our lessons based on what you need to use your English for and what interests you most.
If your goal is exam or presentation preparation, you'll benefit most with 1-2 lessons per week for a minimum of 8 weeks to build confidence in the areas you most need help with to sound more like a native speaker. For accent moderation, extra work with listening and speaking practice in between sessions will speed up that progress. Very much like working out in the gym, getting used to using new muscles / saying things in a different way to what you used to do takes time and practice.
Some of the areas we can work on together are:
- Cultural references - knowing the kinds of vocabulary that match the age of the speaker based on which films/songs/TV shows were popular in different decades as well as common phrases that aren't taught but are part of an English language heritage known to native speakers
- Contracted forms - those linking sounds that take away the strict, academic-sounding feel to your speech and make for more natural sounding English
- Phrasal verbs - what 'we'll make do' actually means and how to 'put up with' multiple prepositions in one sentence...
- Business English - the level of English that's appropriate for work, but not so impersonal that your presentation makes people yawn...
- Pronunciation mistakes - eradicating the classic ones that trip everyone up because English isn't spelt the way it's spoken (place names in English are ridiculous for this!)
- Miscommunication - the top pitfalls for speakers of your native language (I have experience with Eastern European language speakers in particular, but also French, Spanish, Korean and Chinese speakers.)
- Important/relevant grammar - why using the conditional tense can sometimes convey doubt and distrust rather than being polite
- Accent, intonation and voice work - why taking the time to focus on this reaps huge rewards in building rapport
Lessons are a full hour so that you can get the most in one session and these can be recorded if you want the audio of our session to practise with.
