About Austin
I worked at Siemens Energy in the Business Process Team as one of my opportunities. We would automate data that was useful to the company and provided insight in a digestible manner. Furthermore, I would work with customers that were third-party vendors associated with Siemens and give them access to a site to perform business transactions. This involved troubleshooting, patience, and communication in order to get the customer logged in successfully to the site. Lastly, any additional side-projects assigned by managers involved innovation and research as we had to use several people/resources in order to find the information needed.
As a Learning Assistant at UCF, the work at the job entailed assisting students with clicker questions in an auditorium classroom. Clicker questions are questions posed on a big screen that were multiple choice which students had to answer as part of their score in the class. If students were confused, we would assist but not give away the answer to the clicker questions. Proctoring for exams was required as part of the job and we had to support students in lab hours. Lab hours were required hours for students were they did homework and studying. If they had any questions regarding mathematics, there were lab assistants that would answer them. We were required to do lab hours on top of the lecture hours and we were considered the lab assistants for our scheduled times. We provided feedback to the teacher when possible if there was an opportunity for students to grasp the information better. This came from commentary students made, observations made, or intuition from us as we had previously been students for that same subject as well. Finally, a 1-credit class involving communication skills and teaching was part of the requirements for the job.
The final job in my work experience involves Varsity Tutors, where I was a Calculus 1 private tutor. Varsity Tutors is an online tutoring company that recruits interested tutors in working for them. I tutored clients in-person and had to coordinate with the client for meeting as well as the materials they had with them. In other words, Varsity Tutors only matched me with the client and the rest was done by the tutor.

My teaching method or techniques entails going over concepts that weren't understood by the student. If they weren't sure where their issue lied, I would go through the problem with them and ask through each step what they would consider doing next. Afterwards, I would identify the principle not understood and explain what needs to be done instead. Consequently, I would do a few problems with me solving it and explain each step along the way. I would then ask them to do some problems and check their work along the way. If I found issues in their solution or methodology, I would ask why they did a certain problem or step in a specific way.
Usually this teaching method worked but if it didn't, I would try to show an alternative solution to solving the problem as sometimes mathematics has opportunities for this. If not, I would continue to dig deeper with questions to get to the root cause of why they aren't understanding a specific principle in order to fix it.
A typical lesson plan entails going over what the client wants to understand as this is their time. In that time, I would explore what principles need to be understood and how to best prepare them for an upcoming exam or assignment. Of course, I would ask how they wish to prioritize their time and which types of problems need the most priority. This priority is probably based on difficulty, the level of understanding the client has about a topic, as well as how much time they may need to independently research the topic before deciding additional help is required.
What sets me apart as a tutor is the level of detail and precision I give to understanding where my client falls short in topics, as well as having patience and communication skills. I had previous tutoring experience as a private tutor, and previously assisted a Calculus 1 class as a "Learning Assistant" while I went to school part-time. Furthermore, I acquired a Mathematics minor in my academic career at the University of Central Florida. One of my work experiences involved a co-op position at Siemens Energy, a German company I used to work for. It involved working as a team under a manager. Working in a team setting is similar to tutoring as communication and relaying ideas effectively are important, as well as an understanding of expectations in order to achieve goals as a team.
Overall, I desire to tutor basic mathematics up to Calculus 1. Preferably the following subjects: arithmetic, pre-algebra, pre-calculus, algebra 1/2, calculus 1. Therefore, up until the end of high school is the scope of tutoring I wish to cover.
